In the summer after college's freshman year, what did your kids do (or what will they

S tried to find a job, and signed up with temp agencies. Advertised and sent letters to HS language teachers (in advance) hoping for tutoring referrals. He finally got one student. He also got several weeks of temp work. In general, unless a family member could hire you or you had a job from HS to go back to, the pickings were very, very slim around here. At least one kid I know actually went back to his college town in another state because he could get a job there.

That was the last summer he spent at home. Can’t say I blame him.

S1 had an unpaid dream internship three days a week at a website related to his passion. They didn’t care at all about a major. The rest of the week he worked at a beach club grill - found that job on Craigslist.

S2 is looking now, trying for the internship/job combo. He also has a quasi-business selling things for people on ebay.

Neither cleaned his room, quite the opposite.

My daughter got a job at the mall making Pretzels. I had encouraged her that if she could not find a job that related to her major, to get a job that she could return to over Christmas break. It is perfect because they needed extra help over Tgiving break as well as Christmas break. We pay for tuition/room board but it is up to her to work over summer to have spending money.

Hoping that D will get a part time job this summer… She also plans on taking a class at local CC.

Many of my friends have warned me that the first summer back is rough… I am a little worried, but hope it will be a good summer as I bet it will be her last one home.

Last summer was a blur for DD1:

took 6 credits online at our local community college

went on a 2 week vacation - cruise to Alaska (while keeping up with homeworks/tests)

took driver’s ed (!!!) and completed an unwieldy number of supervised hours of driving

another trip for a week to Washington DC

Absolutely no time to work (or rest)

For this summer the plan is:

8 credit hours of summer school (2 4-credit language courses)

work for 2-3 weeks in their career discovery program for architecture

habitat for humanity volunteer

try to find a prof to work for (free) during summer for a few hours a week

I took a language class at the local 4 year school

I’ve read all posts. Thank you all for sharing :)
