If my STEM grades are consistently much higher than my humanities grades, can it be easier to be admitted to Engineering over LSA? (I am planning to major in computer science.)
A commonly asked question in the UMich forum. The slightly easier admission would be LSA for CS, although you don’t actually formally choose a major until the Winter semester of your sophomore year.
The overall acceptance rate to the CoE is about 19%, while the overall acceptance rate to LSA is roughly 25%. But it’s pretty close.
None… Especially if out of state. But if you want CS decide if you want it through LSA or engineering. They have comparisons of the two programs. Do the one and apply to the one that speaks to you and makes the most sense to you. No wrong answers here.
If you have a lack of advanced humanities/social science coursework and/or not the greatest grades in them, or if you suspect your application essays will not be the greatest, or if you find yourself lacking general leadership experience - BUT, you have super solid elections and grades in STEM coursework, great STEM extracurricular achievement, and excellent test scores, it may be better to apply for CoE. It is tough to say for sure, however.
I feel like it is still easier to get accepted to LSA than COE since the admission rate is higher regardless and you are being admitted to a college rather than a particular major. You also have the option to transfer to COE from LSA in sophomore/junior year which is also an option.
