One benefit of this thread is to show how opinion and personal preference can be confused with fact.

Chronology: So much of this is subjective, though! There have been plenty of points brought up in favor of Macs; you just refuse to accept them as being valid.

geek96: He is saying that he doesn’t think using OS X on Macs has any benefit over making a PC a Hackintosh. There are probably a couple things- 1) stability, and 2) legality.

vonlost/sumzup:
Poor stability isn’t the PCs fault, its Apple’s. Windows works fine on a Mac, why shouldn’t OSX? Laws are meant to be enforced. If you cant enforce a law, its as if it never existed. In fact, legality isn’t a benefit of the official OSX, its a disadvantage because the majority of computer users cant use it on their computer. Also, everybody knows that EULAs doesn’t hold up in court.

I have read all of the points, and for most of them there is an alternative on the PC(everything from cables to cloud software). This is why I want only the strongest benefits of the Mac that have no PC alternative.

“for most of them there is an alternative on the PC” leaves those benefits with no PC alternative, which we’ve already covered. “Strongest” and “weakest” is a matter of opinion; we won’t agree on this. Let it go.

sumzup-initially the process might be tough but once its installed, OSX is almost stable on a PC and legal issues only arise if you start selling PCs with pre-installed OSX.

I donot fully agree that Hackintosh is better than Macs. There are a few areas in which Mac wins.
So,I have said it before and I say it again, It ultimately depends on one’s preference.
Windows/Mac/Ubuntu all are good.It just depends on the User to notice it

Chronology- You are saying Its Apple’s fault that the OS they designed to work on their “SPECIFIC” hardware isnt working on the generic PC hardware? Apple never approved of hackintosh, so its not apple fault if hackintosh is unstable on a specific piece of hardware

Apple doesn’t allow OSX to be used on PCs because they are greedy. A Mac’s hardware is the same as a PCs, so there should be no compatibility issues.

Lets start a list of Mac only features. Remember, just because Apple created a name for a feature does not mean that the PC does not have something similar. For example, the MagSafe cables. For the Apple touchpad, you have the HP Imagepad, and the list goes on.

I am surprised to see college confidential so pro-mac(in this sub forum at least). I have a Mac mini and a W8 PC and prefer Windows. Mac mini was used for xcode.

Mac are just user friendly. People who aren’t that computer savvy should get Macs. I’d say ever since Windows 7 though, macs aren’t THAT much more friendly than PCs. Really just a matter of preference as to which is better.

The ImagePad doesn’t compare in terms of accuracy and gesture support.

Here’s why I like the retina MacBook Pro I am currently using:

MagSafe

Touchpad

Backlit keyboard

Sleek form factor

Lightweight

Battery life

Craftsmanship (i.e. not just a hunk of plastic encasing around some components)

Retina display

Thunderbolt support (this is beyond fast)

The rMBP also has more than enough power for my needs. It can handle the games I throw at it on decent settings, and everything else runs perfectly. If I need serious computing power, then I can just use my dev server.

Here’s why I like OS X:

OS X is built on a Unix kernel. This allows me to easily use all the *nix utilities I am used to using.

At the same time, OS X is very stable. It’s clich

I don’t find any benefits of having a Mac instead of a PC.

Macs are less customizable than a PC in terms of hardware.

People claim that Macs are “safer” than PCs because there are very few viruses/Trojans/worms/etc. I have not been infected with anything for several years, and I have nearly zero protection (only the Windows Firewall that is included). I honestly don’t understand how so many people’s computers become infected.

As mentioned, PCs will outperform Macs on benchmarks any day. You’re paying so much more money ($400+) for hardware that is nearly the same. That $400+ is probably going straight to profits, not to mention the other profits Apple is reaping in.

Compatibility. Although more and more software programs are being designed to be compatible with both, the majority will remain compatible and stable with Windows for the time being. Maybe in another few years (5-10 years) everything will be more stable, but the Macs selling at that time will be much faster; the ones now will be outdated, and possibly no longer supported. I mean, look at Windows XP. It was probably the most successful and stable OS ever released, but now it’s no longer being supported.

Besides facts, my opinion is that I will never purchase a Mac until their prices come down. You might as well just install Ubuntu, and that’s free.

sumzup:

MagSafe- How is Magsafe better than:
[MagSafe for the Rest of Us: A DIY Magnetic Power Adaptor](http://www.instructables.com/id/MagSafe-for-the-Rest-of-Us-A-DIY-Magnetic-Power-A/)

Touchpad- Although this is mainly based on opinion, the ImagePad performs the same way as the Apple touchpad. Different gestures, but the technology is still there. Anything after that depends on the software.

Backlit keyboard- Almost all ultrabooks have this feature. I can always find a PC with a backlit keyboard.

Sleek form factor- Ultrabooks are approximately the same size, if not smaller.

Lightweight- Ultrabooks are approximately the same weight, if not lighter.

Battery life- Ultrabooks batteries last just as long as Mac batteries, if not longer.

Craftsmanship- There are Ultrabooks with a much better quality chassis than a Mac. The Panasonic Toughbooks can withstand much more damage than any Mac could.

Retina display- There are PCs with the same default resolution as a Mac with the Retina display.

Thunderbolt support- Thunderbolt is basically a video cable, and all video cables are designed to carry large amounts of bandwidth. However, thunderbolt can also be used to transfer data. Don’t forget:

When choosing between OSX and Unix, you probably wouldn’t be using OSX. Since both the PC and Mac can run Unix distros by default, this is in no way a benefit of ONLY the Mac.

OSX may be more stable because of greater driver support, but if you were going to use Lunix you probably will research compatibility beforehand. When comparing OSX to Windows, Windows has a much greater driver database/support.

The look and feel of the GUI can be completely emulated with an OSX theme for Windows. Shortcuts can be set to your preference.

I have used quite a few OSX programs, but other than the Mac “feel” they provide you with nothing else. In fact, Panic’s only practical software, Coda, is outdone by Dreamweaver CS6. Coda is basically GIMP, while Dreamweaver is Photoshop. I use programs for their intended use: productivity, not pleasure.

Airplay can be used with the PC as well, and when it comes to data synchronization I am sure that there is software for both OSX and Windows that can accomplish the same task. I could get into an iPhone sucks debate, but that is not the point of this thread. However, I will tell you that a UMPC running Windows 8 Pro Media Center+ Ubuntu is much better than iOS.

If these are the only reasons why you own a Mac you should really consider getting a PC, or at least a hackintosh.

If someone is totally satisfied with PC or Mac, why would they change?

Because there are more reasons to switch to a PC. The point of this thread is not to make people switch to the PC (Anybody who can actually research what they buy already have a PC), it is to find benefits of a Mac for the people who don’t want to do the research. So far, almost all unique features of the Mac has a better or equal counterpart on the PC, and the features that do not have a PC counterpart are not benefits because their use is impractical or obsolete. For example, if you believe that the Mac’s touchpad is better than the HP imagepad, you probably don’t realize that PCs exist with touchscreens for Windows 8, and no matter how good a touchpad may be with OSX it will not surpass the experience you will get with a touchscreen and Windows 8.

That’s not an answer to the question. If you’re totally satisfied with a PC, why switch to a Mac? Also vice versa. If you’re totally satisfied, there are no reasons that apply to you. Perhaps it is your opinion that there should be reasons, but that’s just opinion.

There’s no reason for me to switch to a PC. The reasons you give are your *opinions<a href=“like” title=“their use is impractical or obsolete”>/i and apply to you.

You are avoiding the points I made in the previous few posts, and by asking something like that you basically accept my conclusion. You are asking for justification for the change from a Mac to a PC after I already pointed out multiple benefits that the PC has over the Mac. My goal isn’t to persuade people to switch. I could care less what people choose to buy with their own money. Many people can be totally satisfied with an inferior computer, but what I will do is tell these people that they could have obtained more for less if they purchased a PC, and if they don’t want to get a PC it is up to them. I accept the fact that some people want to willingly purchase inferior computers, and my goal is to educate the other types of people who don’t know any better.

If you believe that the Mac is not an inferior computer, try to counter my arguments instead of asking irrelevant questions.

“You are avoiding the points I made in the previous few posts”

I am indeed, because your points are irrelevant to me, because I don’t share your opinions of what is important. IT’S OPINION! :)

Point out the opinions in post #91.

I need to use both Mac and PC to achieve the things I need to get done… Can’t go wrong owning both.

Actually, what you need is OSX, and OSX runs on a PC just fine.

^^^ Really? Was not aware of that. I had been running Winodws 7 on my Mac before I got a PC.
