In your honest opinion

So I'm a junior in High school right now and I want to apply to Stanford early action or through the match program if I'm a Questbridge finalist. My GPA after first semester of junior year is a 3.98 unweighted. I have no idea what it is weighted because my school doesn't do that. I go to a highly competitive small public school in the West. I have good ECs and my sat is at 2000 right now but I'm taking it a second time and aiming for a 2200+ since thats what I'm getting on the practice tests. Im also a URM ( African-American) with an annual income of less than 30,000.

My high school courses look like this:

Freshman year:
Regular courses with the exception of biology and geometry and French 2 which are sophomore courses. (My only grade below an A- was a B+ during the first semester of my freshman year).

Sophomore year:
Ap Economy: W--- study hall, and then switched to Income and Money Managment second semester and got an A+
Adv. Algebra: A/A+
Soph. English: A+/A+
Physics: A/A+
Honors Chemistry: A/A+
History: A+/A+
French 3: A+/A+
Aerobics: A/ journalism: A

Junior Year:
Newspaper: A.--- I'm the editor in chief
Pre-Calculus: A+
AP USH: A
AP Chemistry: A
Junior English: A
AP Statistics: A+
French 4: A+
Psychology: A+ <-- it's regular but I plan on taking the AP exam

The reason my freshman and sophomore classes are so weak on APs is because my school doesn't allow freshmans and sophomores to take them until Junior & Senior year. I had to get special permission to take AP Econ and ended up withdrawing during my first semester of sophomore year because I hated the subject, the class, and it took up a lot of time which is valuable to someone who as an income as low as mine.

I guess what I really want to know is If I'm still competitive. How detrimental was dropping ap economy to my application. Should i take the class I dropped again senior year since I was doing really well in it anyway ( I had a 95% when I dropped). Should I not bother with Stanford and apply to other schools instead. Even though Stanford is my dream. If so, what schools do you think would be a good match + reach for me.

bump…

If you were doing so well in econ why don’t you self-study and take the AP test and then you wouldn’t have to worry? Just a suggestion!

It’s difficult to give you an idea of your chances without knowing what you’re ECs are. Not taking those into account, you have a good chance!

Your academics seem fine for Stanford as long as you get that SAT score up (try for at least 700 in each subscore), but when you get to colleges that high up, extracurriculars are very important as well. What ECs do you have?

your academics are fine for stanford, like others asked, what are your ECs?

MY ECS:
Internship at Governer’s Office 4 hours a week for one semester
Internship at a Libyan Hospital in Benghazi, Libya 8 hours a week for two summers
Volunteered at a Science Museum (very selective) currently @ 110 hours
French Club (I’m President)
I’m the founder and President of a Multicultural/Diversity Club
MUN (I’ve been a General Ambassador for the past 3 years)
Newspaper (I’m Editor and Cheif)
Photography Club

Awards:
Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Silver Medal for Photography
Multiple Student of the Quarters
Multiple Scholarships

Hopefully will have this as an EC:
I’m running for Senior Class President next year.

I should have great reccomendations because I’m very close to the two teachers that I will be asking.
My essays should also be good since I’ll be working on them this summer.

Also, I’m trilingual. Is there a spot on the application for noting that. I speak English (obviously), French, and Arabic.

Finally and MOST IMPORTANTLY, if my stats aren’t good enough for Stanford, we’re should I apply?

bump…

My honest opinion is that you have very good chance.
Here is stats for a questbridge candidate that was accepted to Stanford with lower stats than yours.

I think you have a pretty good chance if you could raise your SAT up a bit.
Do you have a major in mind?
ECs are definitely interesting (at least in my opinion)
What are your plans for this summer?

As for your dropped class, I know some schools have a ‘cut off’ date (I think it’s just before mid term), in which as long as you drop your class before that day, it won’t show up on your transcript. Or, if you switch from class a to class b - a record of class a won’t show up. Ask your guidance counselor maybe?

chance me?

Yes, you’re competitive. Focus on bringing up the scores and apply to several top schools.

I’m interested in pre-med and will most likely major in chemistry
