<p>Admissions counselors look at your previous school because they base your GPA/course load/grades on how rigorous your school is. So, for example, if you are transferring FROM a four year university, the average GPA a school might accept is a 3.4. But if you are transferring FROM a community college, the average GPA a school might accept is a 3.5. See what I mean? Hope this clarifies your question! :)</p>

<p>Okay, there’s definitely more of a distinction than that. I’m not saying colleges look at ranks for their literal values, but a student applying from MIT with a 4.0 GPA is going to get preference over a student applying from Florida Atlantic with a 4.0.</p>
