Inactive Student Chances for Finance at WashU

Demographics

  • US citizen
  • St. Louis
  • Top public school in MO (15-25 acceptances to WashU per year)
  • Female, Chinese
  • Mom working at WashU for 17+ years (only a research technician though)

Intended Major(s)
Finance or any similar business majors

GPA, Rank, and Test Scores

  • Unweighted HS GPA: 4.0/4.0
  • Weighted HS GPA: School doesn’t weight GPA, but probably 4.6
  • Class Rank: School doesn’t rank students
  • ACT/SAT Scores: 1580

Coursework

  • 8 total APs, 4 on APWH exam (only one I’ve taken so far)
  • highest math lvl AP Calc BC
  • I’m in a Business Management class which manages my school store and next year will take CAPS Entrepreneurship where I will probably get finance internships
  • reached Spanish 4 in 10th grade and quit

Now for my weakest points…
Awards

  • 4th place DECA Missouri state competition
  • will probably get AP Scholar with Honor

Extracurriculars

  • Will hopefully do finance internship(s?) next year because of CAPS
  • Math Honors Society
  • Spanish Honors Society - 2 yrs
  • member of animal rights club & volunteering at animal shelter; I will try to get a leadership position my senior yr
  • Loved tennis but only did it 9th & 11th grade, can’t afford it
  • Applied to WashU’s BOLD@Olin summer program, probably not going to get accepted
  • Will try to start a National Business Honor Society chapter at my school my senior year

Essays/LORs/Other

  • LORs: Probably not very strong because I’m very closed off and haven’t formed any close relationships with my teachers/counselor
  • Essays: Definitely not the best because my writing skills are mediocre and I’m not very creative

Cost Constraints / Budget

  • None because if I get in WashU they will pay for my tuition because of my mom’s employee benefits

I will apply ED1 to WashU and that’s pretty much the only school I really care about. Do I have any likelihood of being admitted?

What do you mean by inactive?

As in I didn’t do anything my freshman and sophomore yr, I basically quit everything during COVID cuz I didn’t like any of the clubs I did

So…what about your junior and senior high school years? Still nothing but classes?

Math honors society, 11th grade will be my last year in Spanish honor society, occasional volunteering at the animal shelter, and I’m in an animal rights club that I want to make more active and get a leadership position in my senior year (I’m a junior right now). Also forgot to mention but I work a part time job as a cashier. I have my goals for senior year in the post. Main issue is my involvements aren’t very impressive for a school like WashU.

Part time job is an EC.

That makes me feel better. Thanks, hope you’re right. I’ve just been seeing people with 1600 SAT and amazing ECs getting rejected and waitlisted.

I agree, I think you will probably get in … either immediately through ED or in March if you are deferred/waitlisted.

WashU is known to really favor applicants with strong stats, you have your moms connection, you come across as honest and straightforward - that will come through in your essays, and WashU LOVES ED applicants.

Thank you! Their ED acceptance rate is getting a lot lower though…
