Including a link to my website as a web developer, not a designer?

I made a website and the work I put into it has guided me through my web development experience and led me to love challenging myself, learning, and collaborating with others. I mentioned a couple times in my college essays that I made a website, but never included a link to it. The reason being is that the appearance of the website doesn't give much justice to the work that went into the tools behind it. People outside the web dev/design community often don't differentiate between design and development, so I fear that an application reviewer will unfortunately assume that the look of the site will represent any effort I put into it.

I feel now, after submitting my applications, that it might be strange to mention the website and its importance to me but then not include it.

Should I email the admissions offices a link to the website anyway? Should I explain why I didn't include a link before and why I'm still reluctant to send it?
