I have to write a resume of my extracurricular activities and achievemnts for some of the universities that I am applying to, and I had a question that I hope can be answered: I was considering putting that I won the National Geographic Bee one year in grade school, and also putting that I had be awarded student of the month twice in eigth grade (my high school does not have student of the month for some reason, go figure) is it okay to put these accomplishments on the resume?

You can put them, but schools generally only look at grades 9-12

I think the NG Bee is interesting. The “student of the month” thing is really reaching however. Omit that. Please.

If you were the national prize for National Geographic Bee, include that. Otherwise, don’t bother. S came in12th i our state and didn’t include that info.

Colleges don’t even care about student of the month when it’s a high school achievement.

I won at state and district levels for FBLA in middle school.

Do you all think it would it be worthy to put that down?

No. Hopefully, all of the amazing things you’ve done in high school will not leave room for middle school achievements. The exceptions would be very rare, like winning the National Spelling Bee (in DC, not your region or state).

Oh I see. Well, I haven’t won many awards in high school.

And I am only going to apply to colleges in my state. Would that make a difference?

The only graceful way to include this information is if it fits naturally into your essay, preferably with some self-deprecating humor to indicate that you realize that elementary school achievements are just ‘background noise.’ Something along the lines of , “my love affair with linguistics began with my first state level spelling bee in 4th grade (I made it to Nationals before bombing on ‘euphoria’) and continues to this day…”
