Income from work study on FAFSA

Quick question here because I don't have the papers in front of me. Student earns money from work study. Is that listed as regular income for the student or is it documented differently? Thanks. Looking forward to updating the FAFSA this weekend.

I am positive it should not reflect on your FAFSA if it is work study from your college and not outside job.

Work-study money will be reported in the student's normal income since it is taxable by the IRS. The WS income will then be reported individually later in the form (I believe it is worksheet C), and those numbers will be deducted from income for FA purposes.

That's right-- work-study income gets deducted out from student income before the calculation is made to determine the EFC. So-- given a choice between a work-study job and a non-work-study job, strongly consider the work-study job since the income is treated more favorably. Even if it pays somewhat less than the non-work-study job.
