For 2007, our family income was really high (close to 180k) cause my stepfather sold his printing press business and we had to show that as income....so I'm guessing that's why we are getting 0 financial aid. Otherwise, the aid would be around 120k...so I'm wondering if I decided to go to Duke anyways...would the aid change next year when the income drops back down to normal? Change as in somewhat significant enough so that it will be worthit going there? My mom said to transfer there next year since the first year is so expensive....but then I'd have to go through the whole process again and there's an extremely high chance I'd get rejected since transfer applications are even more competitive than regular...

Do you think if I could show them 2006 tax returns, I can show them that the spike in income is high just for this year? Might that change their opinion?

sorry I don’t know enough about this to help you. But good luck in whatever you end up doing!

Predator,

If your income goes down during the 2nd year, the university would adjust your Financial Aid for that sophomore year.

And its worth a shot showing them the 2006 tax returns…see what you can do.

Anyone have experience with emailing Duke? I called and was told to email the counselor listed on my aid package document…so I emailed her yesterday around 3/4pm. Still haven’t received a reply yet…so it’s been around 28 hours. Do they usually take 2-3 days?

I was in the same situation freshman year (1 time hike in parents’ taxes due to selling of a property). The financial aid office worked with me and said that since it was a 1 time thing, they would calculate my F.A. package according to our normal income and not include the property sale. You need to call then ASAP and let them know of this and see what they can do.

you can also write a letter about “special circumstances” that they may or may not care to consider.

the email may take a couple of days. call them and talk about this. from my experience, the financial aid office is really understanding.

leejwwc, when they recalculated your FA package, did it make a difference in the amount of aid they gave you? (at least something somewhat significant)

Has anyone else had this issue? Did Duke recalculate according to the previous year’s financial info?
