Incoming Freshman daughter

I bought a small backpack with my S school logo on it (black) which he used all year as it was big enough for his laptop if needed, and without the laptop, big enough for a couple of books. It was great for him, but then he used his backpack in high school. S2 and S3 wouldn’t be caught dead with a backpack in HS, so I guess its really up to your daughter.

My D has a Vera Bradley bag for small loads and a Northface backpack for bigger loads. Luckily the campus is pretty small so it will be easy to go back and forth to her room.

What does the daughter want? Mine used MY Jansport backpack. My DD is very small and a wheeled bag was NEVER a consideration. When she was a senior she got a Vera Bradley tote that she used. (She still wouldn’t give me my backpack…and in fact has it with her now!!).

a large, waterproof backpack, if school is spread-out geographically and there is heavy winter weather.

bookbag and back pack have always meant the same thing to me??? lol

At our local flagship university I see a lot of girls with messenger bags, Vera Bradley totes, and an occasional backpack. Boys carry backpacks and messenger bags. I don’t think anyone pays any attention to what anyone else is carrying. My son has a very good looking canvas and leather messenger bag that is big enough for his laptop (although I don’t think he carries the laptop around much), and a backpack that is waterproof. He uses both of them randomly. Your daughter should carry whatever she likes, as long as it can hold a few notebooks, and/or a laptop.

I think when people say bookbag they mean a messenger bag. My daughter has one of these: [Timbuk2 Bags - Messenger](http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/messenger/) We’re kind of an anti-label family though.

I’m not planning on buying my daughter something new at this time. She is planning to take the Vera bag she used in hs, as well as her waterproof LL Bean backpack that she stopped using a couple years ago. If neither happen to work out, she can always pick something up later.

D uses a Chrome Bag. Really comfy and rugged…[Messenger Bags - Bags | CHROME | Official Site](<a href=“Chrome Industries | Messenger Bags, Backpacks, & Tech Gear”>Chrome Industries | Messenger Bags, Backpacks, & Tech Gear)
The wide strap really distributes the weight well.
I had to look up Vera…not really a West Coast thing.

after she had the Chrome for a year, I bought one for myself for travel. I love it.

Have her choose what she wants to use. I think most college kids use backpacks but really it is an individual decision. And I agree I have never seen any college kid use a rolling backpack. If she wants to make sure she fits in and wants to see what the other kids have wait til orientation and order what she wants online. A few days without one is no big deal.
