Hey Jeff, I have read some of your previous replies and they have been wonderful. I will be auditioning for MT in February. I found out last night that there was a dance portion and freaked out. I have never take dance classes before and that worries me. When the dance portion comes by, are several auditioners put in a room and taught a dance? How much time is there to learn it? Lastly, are we to perform it in front of the other people there auditioning?
The dance call is for our faculty to assess what your current skill level of dance is, as well as what your potential to grow would be in our program. It will not make or break your audition!! It will be scored equally alongside your monologue and song. The dance portion will normally consist of ballet taught to students at the barre in the style of a class, followed by an across-the-floor jazz progression. The progression will usually be filmed for our faculty to reference later, and will be executed in groups of 4-5 auditionees at a time.
The ball state BFA program is very competitive, and we are looking for students who are well-rounded in terms of singing, acting, and dancing. However more important to us is the potential for growth and willingness to learn! Coming to your audition and doing your very best with a positive, fearless attitude is the best thing you can do! The faculty all want to see you succeed!
Can you tell me the process for getting an audition scheduled? My daughter has applied to BSU and is awaiting a decision on her academic acceptance. It’s not clear to us however how the audition scheduling process works. Do you wait until she’s academically accepted and then contact her for an audition date? Or are there steps she should be taking to get this scheduled? Your website gives details on what is required for the audition but not how they are scheduled. Thanks!
We are in the same situation. I looked again just a few minutes ago and saw this:
“Prospective students must apply to and be accepted by Ball State University to be considered for admission into the Department of Theatre and Dance.”
When she completed the online application, there was a section that asked what her intended major was and then she was asked to select an audition date.
I called them and they said they’ll be working on the audition schedule after Thanksgiving. Also, I was wrong, you just need to apply to the school, not be accepted to get an audition.
All of our auditions are requested through the application process. While applying to Ball State, when you input “Musical Theatre” as your intended major, you are prompted with all of our potential on and off-campus audition dates. You select which audition date you would like to attend, and we receive that information. We then schedule all auditions accordingly. If you or your son or daughter have requested an audition for us at Unifieds or on campus in February, they should be receiving an e-mail with an appointment confirmation and more details closer to the date of that audition! If you have any questions about whether or not you have an audition scheduled with us, feel free to e-mail us at auditions@bsu.edu
Letters of interest will be sent out to all those that auditioned for us, regardless of application status. Those letters of interest will be sent out within two weeks of your audition date!
