I am an incoming senior to [insert high school name]. i have been seriously looking at Rice as a potential first choice for college. I have narrowed my fields of study down to Pre-law or Pre-Med. I understand that these are not necessarily a "major" and that it leaves a lot of freedom for class and major choices. My questions are...

Are my qualifications adequate for acceptance and/or substantial merit based aid?

Is Rice's Pre-Med program a good one? What about Pre-Law?

ACT:34 - ACT superstore:35.5 - GPA: ~4.3 - Unweighted GPA: 4.0 - Boys' State participant - Debate team captain - Football letter winner - 5th of 250 class rank - Accelerated Math placement - projected 10 AP classes with a score of 4 or 5 by senior year - -if more info is needed let me know -

Pre-law is NOT a good choice. Unless you get into the top 15 law schools, you will have a hard time because mos people in law are already established. Thus, it’s difficult for a young lawyer to make good money. <a href=“Before You Get Your MBA or Law Degree - YouTube”>Before You Get Your MBA or Law Degree - YouTube; < Watch this to get a deeper explanation. It depends how well you do in college and on the MCAT/LSATS if you get into med/law school.

I’m not going to try and dispute what the person above me said statistically, but I will say I think it’s not what you were asking and it’s not actually very good advice. If you want to be a lawyer or judge or paralegal or something else then do pre law and go to law school! When you go to a school like Rice, I think that market flooding is a kind of dumb excuse to not follow your passions.

That being said, I haven’t heard much about Rice’s pre law stuff, and I don’t really know anyone that I can think of who is pre law. But do some research online and maybe you will find that I’m wrong and my anecdotal evidence is not representative of the student body Pre med is very very popular and Rice is across the street from the largest medical center in the world, so definitely a good school for pre med! You’re a good applicant, but no one is guaranteed unfortunately. Several people, myself included, have given what I think is very good advice about admissions on other posts, so I suggest browsing the rest of the Rice page. (And just FYI, rice doesn’t superscore.)

Merit aid is not a huge thing at Rice. They do have several good scholarships, but not just “you got really good grades, here’s some money” scholarships. But who knows, you may get one if you stand out in some way! Everyone is considered on admission, so no extra applications are required. You can check out the list here: http://financialaid.rice.edu/scholarships.aspx

Premed isn’t a major. It is a set of classes that are required for medical school.

Rice is a good school for ending up in medical school though - the medical school acceptance rate is really high (one of the top, if I remember correctly)
