Incoming Hotchkiss Students

Hi all,
I'm curious if any of you out there will be heading to Hotchkiss with me this fall. I'd love to get in contact with people before school starts. Hopefully, this thread can become an ongoing conversation for future Bearcats. Let me know

Thanks

I’ll be entering 9th grade at Hotchkiss next fall!
What grade will you be entering?

I will be entering as a prep! Are you guys excited?

Hi Bearcat19,

Im also coming as a prep next year. Im super excited! I can’t wait to attend. Can’t decide between a single or a roommate. What are you guys doing?

@soccerkid19 I’m doing single or day-student roommate

Hey guys! We are two sophomores at Hotchkiss and we are here to answer any questions! Feel free to ask us anything or message us. Bleed Blue!

So what does an incoming prep need to pack for living at Hkiss? Do students have mini fridges in their rooms or microwaves? Bring extra chairs or bean bags? Rugs for room? How does bathroom/shower usage work? Are there places to store toiletries in the bathroom or do students carry things back and forth from their rooms?

Students don’t have microwaves in their own rooms, but there is a microwave in the common room of every dorm. Only proctors are allowed to have fridges, so I always just asked my proctor if I could store food in her fridge. I wouldn’t recommend bringing extra chairs until you see your room because the amount of unoccupied space in each room depends on what dorm you’re in/what floor you’re on/if you have a roommate, etc. I would definitely recommend getting some sort of shelving system, though, because they’re very useful for organization and the smaller ones could fit in any room. Whether you bring a rug or not is personal preference- they’re not necessary but definitely do make the room feel cozier. In general, I think that many preps do not bring rugs so don’t feel like you have to have one. Other things you may want include bed risers and a box for storage under the bed, a surge protector/power strip, a shoe rack, and other closet organizers. Bathrooms are shared by one entire floor (although some dorms have 2 bathrooms per floor). Typically there is no line to use the showers, but if there is, it’s only a few minutes. From my experience, a lot of people like to shower right before or after study hall or right before lights out; those times are when you are most likely going to have to wait for a shower. Some dorms do have cubbies to store toiletries but many do not, so you should bring a shower caddy. Hope this was helpful!
