Hey...So I'll probably end up majoring in BME and I have a few questions...

First, if I have AP Chemistry credit, can I go straight to Chem 22L rather than take 21L? Also, will Chem 22L fulfill 1/4 of my Natural Science requirement? In addition, will I get credit for 21L if I place out of it? I know BME majors need 2 semesters of Chemistry to graduate. Will my placing out of 21L count as one of those two semesters?

Second, when I got my AP score report last summer after my junior year, my results from sophomore year were not on it (I called and got them to add in my sophomore year scores so my junior and sophomore year scores are on the same grade report now). I took Calc BC after my junior year, and I'm a little worried that when the score report gets sent to Duke, my results from junior year won't be on it and I won't be able to register for Math 103. Should I request a score report to be sent right now just in case? I really don't want to retake Math 32L since I took multivariable calculus my senior year of high school and would rather just "retake" that by taking Math 103 and then move on.

1). You can go straight to Chem 22 but I think it's only offered in the spring. If you looking to just get chem over with, take a look at chem 23. It's one semester and counts for both 21 and 22.

2). If you have the AP score to place out of a class, then you will get AP credit for it and it will show up on your transcript as an AP credit. So if you have a 4 or 5 for AP chem, you will get credit equivalent to chem 21.

3). Yes, your placing out of chem 21 with AP credit will count towards one of those two semester credit requirements.

4). Regarding AP score reporting, I think if you requested a report sent when you took the test, then only scores from that year will be sent. The reason I believe is that the request is tied to a specific barcode, which happens to be the same for all tests taken in the same year but different for tests taken in different years. What you can do is to send them a letter with barcode stickers from every year in which you've taken APs. That way, they can track down all the tests you've taken and include them in a comprehensive report.

Thank you so much! Chem 22L is offered in the fall, but only one section of it is. I currently have it in my primary bookbag, but I may switch to 23L. How hard would you say it is? I was a little worried since it goes at double speed of 21 and 22...

Ok, if chem 22 is offered in the fall, then that's another option. Overall, I find that chem 21/22 goes more into detail whereas chem 23 gives a more general picture. As for difficulty, I honestly think that they are both about the same. My friend took 22 while I took 23 and we both put in about the same effort and got through the class so it was alright. Regarding speed, chem 23 won't be overwhelming and going at warp speed, so you have nothing to worry about.

How would you contact CollegeBoard to send AP scores from other years? Would it be alright if I sent most of these scores informally through Duke's application?

I really just want to get Math 32 over with.. and I can't take Math 41, since Orgo & FOCUS both conflict with Math 41..

I don't think you can send AP scores on the application and have it count. As far as I know, only the admissions office routinely looks at applications. However, the registrar's office is the one that handles transcripts and course credits. So I would think that the registrar won't be able to see your AP scores if they are on the application. You probably should send in an official AP score report.

Requests for score reports can be made using forms on the back of AP score reports from past years. Or by contacting CB at the following address and phone:

AP Services
P.O. Box 6671
Princeton, NJ 08541-6671
Phone: (609) 771-7300 or (888) 225-5427 (toll-free in the U.S. and Canada)

If you write them a letter, be sure to include the following info:

1) the service you are requesting (grade cancellation, grade reporting, etc)
2) Your full name, home address, gender, date of birth, AP number(s), and social security number.
3) Each year you took AP Exams.
4) Payment info
5) Info on the college where you want the report sent (include the code)

Note that sometimes prereqs are not enforced (although this varies by department). I know many people who took bio 118 before bio 25, for example. If a course doesn't require a permission number or have the enforced prereqs logo, you can almost always sign up for it if you want to be challenged and nobody checks to make sure you have fulfilled the prereq. Obviously, in some instances this wouldn't be a smart idea. I don't think I got my AP scores until mid-July and had already signed up for math 103 at that point, just figuring that I got a 4 or a 5 on it. There was no issue.

I just called CollegeBoard about score reporting and they said if your scores from your other years are on the same transcript as the ones from senior year (and they should be unless you got a name/school change or something) then all the scores will get sent together (like the SAT and NOT like the ACT). However, you may want to call to verify all of your scores are on the same report. Mine weren't when I just called.

Can someone reply to my question though, please? As an incoming freshman who has third window, would I be more likely to get into Chem 22L or 23L?

Both are big lectures, but I think chem 22 might be harder to get into based purely on the fact that it has a smaller number of recitation and lab sections than chem 23, but the upside is that most people who have AP chem credit generally opt for chem 23 instead of chem 22 so the competition isn't as fierce.
