My TOEFL requirement hasnt been waived yet... :(

How many of you have applied to Engg? Has anyone else received an email from Mark D. Spencer,Director, Engineering Admissions a few days back?

Yeah, I got an email on the 15th stating that my app had been forwarded to the College of Engineering, and that they had begun reviewing it.

No, this email is from Mark Spencer, Director Engg Admissions after they have received your materials. May be you will get a little later as only on 15th it had gone there.

@ronty: sorry for the bad news but Cornell wants you to score 670 in CR/Wri b4 they waive the TOEFL for you. Never mind, I never submitted nor even took the SAT Writing, so it's up to them to trash my application:D

But one of my friend who scored around 610 in CR and 580 in Wr got a TOEFL waiver...Moreover I have done my complete schooling in English... :(

I think it's 670+ only in CR. Yeah, I know the TOEFL doesnt make sense. But might as well give it.

as per all cases i have seen they seem to look for other options for waiving this also .... yet of all people without sta CR670+ who got toefl waived , their were other reasonable justification in application metrials and stats also..

Also well to my notice none below 600cr have got his waiver so i guess they arent waiving it for below 600 score which is a sort off standard cutoff for others..'

SM

Err... my email was from Mark Spencer, Director of Engineering Admissions:

February 15, 2006

Greetings from Ithaca!

Now that your application has arrived at Cornell, I wanted to touch base with
you and thank you for taking the time to consider Cornell University's College
of Engineering! Some of you may have recently been contacted about missing information
from your application. If so, I wanted to let you know that there is no penalty
for sending information to us at this later date, but we do appreciate your efforts
in getting us that information soon. Also, if your school has not already done
so, you might want to remind your college counseling office to send in your mid-year
grades, which we require as well.

I realize that you have put a lot of effort and energy into the completion of
the Cornell application. Pulling together the information necessary to apply
takes focus, attention to detail, and resolve as you outline multiple facets
of your life and present them to our admissions committees; not an easy task
at all! Please know that we sincerely appreciate your effort and thank you for
taking the time to present this material to us.

I would also like to assure you that all the information you provided will be
reviewed and considered carefully as your application passes through our review
process. Our ultimate goal is to make the best decision for you, the university,
and the college and the depth of information available in your application will
help us do just that.

And so now I must ask you to be patient as we take on the task of reviewing the
applicants for admission to the Cornell Engineering first-year class for the
fall of 2006. Please accept my best wishes for a great spring semester!

Sincerely,

Mark D. Spencer
Director, Engineering Admissions

I guess they expect international students to be enrolled in English or American schools or something, cuz if not, chances to be fluent in english language are really low. Anyways, I am peruvian and have studied in my country always. I was enrolled in an english school however and did Take IB. I guess they expected u guys to have taken that or A-level or IGCSE's or something. But if yoiu didn't cuz you live in US, just give them a call and that should clear that up.

On another point. You guys mentioned you had an account! I don't! and I am really nervous, cuz I haven't received any confirmation that my application is being processed. I have only checked in the common app website, and it appears as 'downloaded' but still no formal notoification from the school. Should I call them? I guess I should. Although I received and notification from Yale U just a 9 days or so ago...suggestions? or anyone in the same position?

Goto https://admissions.cornell.edu/selfservice/
Create a new account and then log in to see the status of ur application.

Yeah! I figured that out like an hour or so ago! Many thanks any ways! I had no idea i could simply give my email and they would email me the PIN number within seconds. I thought they were going to send and envelope through regular mail as Yale did, that was why I was worried.

Many thanks anyways!

I'm not sure about that! I got 660 in the critical reading section and had the TOEFL waived. But I did go to an english school, and had the IB, maybe that helped.

Just call them or make your GC email them,if you assist to a english school or somehtign similar. Best of luck

My pleasure :)
I have emailed them for waiving for my TOEFL... I have scored very high marks in National High School Leaving English Examination (Grade A1) I think they must look into this

with reference to arellav's post:
I dont think that they'd base TOEFL waivers on whether u studied in an English school or not.

Congrats on saving $140:D What do you think they'll do to an app that doesn't have the SAT Writing score? Toss it in the trash can?

If that application (without Writing part) is of Miaoling, then they will keep it in the accepted student's stack :D

Maybe not. What i mean is that they need to have proof that the applicant is frequent in the english language. And I guess, if the toefl is not send, somew other sort of exam opr anything should. No sure tho. Calla nd ask.

Oh yeah the whole thing sucks. I realize I'm asking them to tweak A LOT of rules. Still, the thing is, I flatter my self my CR score is pretty good. Oh, btw, how much $ do you ask for, ronty? I'm asking for like $45000:D and that pretty much decides your fate;)
Thanx arellav btw, I wrote to them to ask for that waiver, but they haven't replied praying

I mentioned that I will pay 10k/per annum
Is it good or bad?
