I need help increasing my ACT reading. The first ACT i got
English: 28
Math: 35
Reading: 22
Science 35
second ACT i got
English: 31
Math:35
Reading:22
Science:29
I consistently get the same score on reading and it is screwing my composite up. How do I increase reading? I asked my friends who got over 30 on reading and they said they just read.
My current strategy is actually no strategy at all, I just read the message very quickly then answers the questions. I do this because that is what most people do. I looked up strategy like read the questions first, or write a few sentence about each passage. Do that actually work? Most people don’t work. Is there any good strategy for it? If not, how do I practice to increase reading comprehension? Because at the moment, I read the message and miss key details for the questions.
You have to read quickly and you have to understand. You have to almost tell yourself that you are interested in the passage and read it like that. Underline crucial points.
Additionally, you don’t have to do the test in order. I go from shortest passage to longest (or hardest looking) passage then do the other two. You have to attack the reading section but take enough time so that you understand everything. Take a lot of practice reading tests as well.
I speed through them at around 3-4 minutes. But when I get to a question I don’t know, I don’t know where to refer to. Like do I want to skim through the whole passage again? I also don’t do them in order.
Underlining and noting changes in the subject is crucial. Those are your reference points in the passage. While practicing, you may even want to just write a key word beside each paragraph that tells you the subject of that paragraph.
By the way, I’m jealous of your 35 on ACT science. My first shot at it was a 26. I got a 35 on reading, though.
