My son got a call from MU last night and they said they were able to increase his grant. It went up by almost $5,000. We were just procrastinating so this was a really nice surprise!
Did this happen to anyone else?

Congratulations! Did you ASK for more $$? We actually sent in a request earlier this week for them to relook at our financial package due to some special circumstances, but haven’t heard back.

No we didn’t ask. They had called my son earlier in the month and asked if he had made his decision yet and he said we were still debating the finances.

That’s great for you keymom, but sadly for us it completely contradicts what one of their admissions people told me face to face at Destination Marquette, which is that their Ignatius/Magis awards are not negotiable. “We make our best offer up front,” he told me. And it’s not like I was being greedy - my son was offered only $7400 and his ACT puts him in the top 12.5% of the current freshman class.

It’s hard not to get the feeling that they’re playing games and from where I sit, it really stinks.

If keymom is talking about grant money based on financial need, as opposed to scholarship money based on merit, it’s not necessarily a contradiction. I’m glad for you either way.

wow, i asked about getting more money but they gave me all they could

It was indeed the grant not scholarship $. We were told the same thing with our oldest son…no negotiation in Ignatius. We presented other scholarship offers from other schools and they increased his grant money. We have found the same thing at other schools. It is almost like buying a car…I just wish the best offer would go out in the beginning.
