It mentions how the incoming freshmen class size is estimated to be about 1300. Didn't the admissions office say they were shooting for a class size of 1075? What does this mean for waitlisted students?

The Tech is known for getting news out quickly and correcting itself later…while it’s possible that this is true, I’d wait for it to be corroborated before jumping to conclusions.

The only reason why I said a 300 increase isn’t likely is just because I don’t see how MIT can justify itself taking 300 students off the waitlist in one year.

The anticipated expansion of the student body size that has been mentioned is distributed over the course of several years in every report I have seen so far. This is the first mention that there might be a huge jump in the enrollment this year.

For the incoming class size to get to 1300 in one year, it would make the most sense for Admissions to just take 300/(anticipated yield) extra people in one year from RD and EA, not to take a massive amount off the waitlist. This year, there was an increase in RD/EA enrollment of just over a dozen, and judging from the slow increases in admitted numbers from year to year, I think MIT is reaching that 1300 (or whatever number they have as the eventual goal) through slowly expanding the student body size every year.

Furthermore, Ashdown is not complete yet. I’m not sure whether MIT is in such dire financial straits that we really need to admit all these new prefrosh immediately this year.

“This article reports a number that was relayed to The Tech in error. The class of 2014 will not have “around 1,300” students. According to Dean of Admissions Stuart Schmill '86, MIT is planning to enroll 1070 students for the class of 2014, the same target for last year’s incoming class.” - [Freshmen set to crowd MacGregor - The Tech](http://tech.mit.edu/V130/N25/housing.html)
