Hi all,
I am an OOS student. I received 18k a year (Provost’s Scholarship) to Temple University. If they were still using the automatic system, I would have received the full tuition Presidential Scholarship. I have heard that Temple does not really budge on financial awards, but I am going to try anyway by writing a letter and including larger merit awards I have received from other schools. I will also say in the letter that if I receive the full tuition scholarship, I will immediately commit to Temple. Does anybody have any suggestions or words of advice?
Thanks.
After 3 years, people need to stop saying “Under the old system I would have gotten X.” Temple is not going to care if you contact them and say if you give me free tuition I will attend. Are you serious? You got a great scholarship from Temple. If you got a better offer somewhere else offering you a lower cost of attendance I suggest you go there. Larger merit awards somewhere else do not mean anything. What is the cost of attendance at those schools? Also, out of curiosity, what are your stats?
Good luck. I live in-state and Temple seems to be luring a lot of high stats kids with really amazing merit offers around here. I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you.
It’s called “negotiating “ and it’s fine. If the other schools are comparable to Temple there is no harm. You have nothing to lose.
Do a google search and you’ll find step by step instructions on how to proceed.
Good luck!
@jnkam24 even though they do not use the old system it is hard for me to see any rhyme or reason to the new system, figured it might be worth a shot to cite. Not sure what they would care about then? Yes it is a great scholarship but of course if it is possible to get more, I want to try. My stats… not exactly sure how Temple recalculates GPA but I am a straight A student (and AP classes) with a 1490 SAT. You are saying they do not care about other offers, comparison to the old system, or my offer to commit, so then what do you think they would care about? Nothing?
@cbs1211 Contact your admissions rep and ask them for assistance in submitting an appeal for increased merit based scholarship.
Give it a shot. It’s not like they’ll rescind your current offer. You might not be successful, but I would focus on what skills and strengths you will bring to Temple. You could mention specific competing offers but 1) COA could still be more at those schools, even after aid and 2) Temple has what they have to work with. The fact that they’re offering lower scholarships than in previous years indicates stiff competition and that funding may be down. Focus on what you can offer and let them know it’s your top choice and that you will attend if you can make it work financially. I don’t know if they already released financial aid based on FAFSA, but perhaps you’ll get some help there too. Best of luck to you.
They also care about your extracurriculars and essays. That’s why they ask you to write about it in your application. Make sure you drop that entitled attitude wen you ask them.
