Independant study for a short while then returning

Are there any problems with taking an independent study program for a couple of months during high school to speed up some classes and then getting back into a regular school? Will the universities look at that later on and frown upon it?

What exactly do you mean by "independent study" and a "short while?" If you are going to take time off from traditional school to travel, take a role in the opera or something, then I suppose it makes sense. To me, and perhaps college admissions officers, it seems like you are jumping off one path to another, and then back. Why?

If you attend a school that cannot meet your educational needs, you might consider not returning to it at all.

Unless you are prepared to fully explain the reasons behind your decision to take a break from school, it may not be worth it.

Independent study in California is when the student goes to the school twice a week, turns in his or her work, takes a test and gets a grade for that packet of work, after 5 packets of work for the same class,5 packets=5 units =5 credits, you get your official grade for the class. Its called independent study because there is no one at home to instruct you,its up to you to get tutor help if you need it.The teachers are the ones at the center that grade your work and give you the tests to take.

As for the reason. This provides a way to get ahead even a year and shorten your graduation time because the pace is based on how fast you can go.So naturally,i wouldn't mind graduating early and having a extra year to prepare for the right university.

Oh, thank you for explaining independent study. Why do you want to do that? Is school boring for you? I only ask because it is an unusual step to take if planning on returning to school and then appying to college. I know some working actors in CA who do independent study while they're on set.

Colleges would be very interested in how you spent your extra year before attending university. There are many valid options: employment, internship, volunteering, traveling. Have you thought about what you'd like to do to prepare for university?

Well its not really a case of whether it is boring or not,its just a matter of getting ahead and having high school out of the way to focus on the things you mentioned like volunteer work, work, and college classes.I want to return to regular school at the end so the colleges i apply to will see a regular school diploma because i am under the impression that independent study diploma won't look so professional or official.I have heard mixed opinions on this situation,so its still in the air whether or not i would return.I guess the last thing that is really left is to call some of the universities and get some info from them.

thanks for taking the time to opinion
