Hello! I was wondering if knowing multiple languages(studied independently) would help an applicant in the admissions process. For example, my grandparents live in Northern Europe and I often travel there, so I have taught myself Finnish and Swedish. I can now communicate in both of these languages quite effectively(Probably B2/C1 for those familiar with CEF). Would this give me any sort of edge? Does it matter that both languages are relatively obscure?

If you are applying for a language major it would be of interest. Otherwise probably not much. It could, however, be the subject of an essay.

I agree; multilingual applicants are pretty common.

Ah- oh well, thanks anyway. I was hoping it would be considered some kind of extracurricular.
