I am a married, independent student who will need private loans to cover my last 2 years of undergrad. My credit score is 740 and we currently have the income to cover loan payments (probably around $20k over both years). However, we will be relocating so I can attend my new school, and it is likely that my income will drop once we do.

If I don't have anyone who can cosign for me, is it likely that I will be approved for any private loans? I will need the loans starting in Fall 2012, how early should I be applying? Thanks in advance.

It is very unlikely you will get loans without a cosigner. Does your spouse have a job? Why are you moving to a new school?

Yes, we are both employed and will both have to continue working after the move.

I am finished with all my community college courses, and the program I am entering is not offered anywhere in my state.

If you are attending a state school, you might check whether it falls under one of the cooperative programs between states so that you are eligible for in-state tuition. On the East Coast, there in the education common market.

MD Mom:
Great suggestion, thanks! Unfortunately, my state only participates in the ECM for graduate-level studies, so I am out of luck.

Bummer. Well maybe you will be eligible for residency shortly after you move.

Is there any comparable program in the state? What’s the area of study?

I currently live in Florida, I will be attending UMD-College Park for their urban forestry program.

University of Florida offers an urban forestry concentration in their forest resources program, but it is a less-focused discipline than the UMD major. Relocating to Gainesville for two years is also an unappealing and equally-expensive alternative to moving to the DC metro, that will not yield the same networking opportunities (I hope to work for the NPS or Department of the Interior).

I’m (unfortunately) aware of the drawbacks to attending an out of state university, but it’s the best move for my family. Just trying to make it happen with the least stress possible.
