Independent Students w/question about CSS Profile

So my husband and I recently applied to a college which requires the CSS Profile to help generate student aid packages. The thing is the Profile uses parental information even though we're married and obviously independents. My question is: is there any way we can we bypass having to include parental finances?

Both of our respective parents aren't willing to even discuss their finances with us...and I'm not sure what to do. My husband is 25 (soon to be 26) and I'm 23 presently. We've been married for a number of years and haven't had any financial assistance from family since before we even got married! At no point were we even expecting them to help with college costs.

FYI: We're applying for entry as undergraduates. Currently studying at a local CC.

I'd greatly appreciate any feedback...especially if someone has been in a similar situation. Thanks!

Bump… :)

Why don’t you call the college and ask them how you fill out the Profile? Seems to be the quickest and most accurate way to get an answer.

I thought anyone over the age of 24 was considered independent and if one was married they are considered independent as well.

^^Yes for federal aid (the FAFSA form) you could be considered independent, but the OP is asking about the College Board profile form which is used by several hundred colleges out of thousands so they are asking about a different form than FAFSA.

Yes I do think I’ll just call the FinAid dept at the college. I was originally hoping that maybe someone else on College Confidential might have been in a similar situation and could share some insight. Oh well…

I did end up calling the customer service line at CollegeBoard (CSS Profile dept) and they were very helpful. Apparently you can request a waiver of some type which allows you to submit the form without parental info. So hopefully that’s what’ll happen. I talked at greater length today with my parents and hubbys parents and neither party is willing to share their financial situation with us (for the Profile or any other college-expense related purpose). That’s that I suppose. :/

Agreed…call the colleges. I’m sure you are not the first married couple who has had this situation. The colleges should be able to tell you their process.
