I'm selecting courses for next year (I'm a junior). So far I have 5 ap's, and I have one spot left. There aren't any more ap's left that i like/have the prereqs for, so I was thinking about taking an independent study. We've had students do them in finance/economics, so I'm thinking of pursuing something in that, or perhaps stats/economics. Would this seem like a good idea or would colleges see this as a joke period?

I did my entire high school course load through independent study. I got accepted into every school I applied to (UW-Madison, Mich St, LUC, Boulder, Indiana...obviously not the best schools ever, but perfect for me..) and none of them really seemed to take it as a joke. It would probably be considered a good thing as it's showing that you're actively seeking out opportunities to enhance your education.

Just depends on where you do your independent study though. Some programs can be sketchy, lesser known, and so on...

Why would you work hard senior year? Colleges dont care after first term and besides, you should go out and have fun. Play now and then go explore the realm of knowledge in college.

depends.. some classes are HELLLA easy. I took BYU independent studies for 9 months of my freshman year (long story) and i finished freshman, sophmore and junior year. an econ classs will definitly not take you a whole semester to finish...
just my 2 cents
