Independent Study Affects Admissions?

What are the downfalls of taking a class as an independent study, instead of the actual class?

Instead of the 4 AP classes I requested, I could only fit in 2! At my school, AP US History and AP Chemistry were offered only once in the same class period.

So, do you think taking AP Chemistry for the actual class, and APUSH as independent study be bad? I chose APUSH because I'm guessing it is more text-based than AP Chem (due to labs). What do you think?

If your AP scores=5, then adcoms will be impressed. However, make sure you get at least a 4. You can also explain this in the 'additional information' section. Good luck!

thanks forgotten, but it seems I have forgotten (ha ha ha) to mention that I am a senior.

Since you are a senior, I doubt your independent studying will affect your college admissions very much since they won't know you are doing so, and even if they do they can't really judge you on it because the only factor they can judge an independently studied course is through the AP test (and your not taking that until May of '09).

Now the question becomes purely whether you want college credit or not. Really, I think if you have the initiative and have the money to take the AP test, then why not? If you do well then more credit for you, if you do bad its not like its going to affect your admissions. I would recommend however you take a look at the AP section of these boards, especially:

Thanks. I think I had a skewed idea of independent study since I've never had it before. I thought I would follow the same curriculum, do the homework, take the tests and still get graded, but just do so the hour before the actual class. I was wrong. That changes everything. Thank you.

There's no such thing as what I just explained is it?

My D is doing an independent study because her school didn't have enough students sign up to offer Latin IV. Her school has a process whereby the student and teacher draw up an independent study contract which is approved by the principal. Then the independent study class will go on her transcript and I think she can even get a grade from the teacher. Maybe you can see if your school has a similar procedure. Good luck!

Yay! Thanks for the hope, dsult. Our school already has APUSH so it really shouldn't be too hard to grade me, just take tests and assignments one period earlier each day. I'm going to call my GC and History teacher and try it.

That sounds great. I hope it works out for you.
