Independent study books.

Taking macro/micro/world history independent study and i need to buy my books soon. Anyone have recommended books for any of these three subjects?

Also would it be more beneficial to use video tapes/dvds to self teach? I have 90 minutes set aside in the schedule daily to use how I please, and I've heard that tapes can be more usefull, although more expensive..

textbooks or prep books?

For Micro/Macro, I used Economics Today by Roger Leroy Miller. For a prepbook I used Princeton Review... PR is amazing for Micro, but I've heard it's not as good for Macro.

need textbooks to learn the material, review books should be easier to get.

Would anyone else recommend Economics Today macro and micro versions? They seem to be good choices...

And does anyone have a suggestion for World History?

princeton review and barrons for world history. If you only want to buy one, than buy princeton review. Have you taken any world history before?

The prep. books for mac/micr (PR and Barrons) should be sufficient enough to study the material. The actual textbooks teach the same with more words, etc. Same applies to world history, if you want to memorize the material, study from the prep. book, which will allow you have all the important info.

orly, so then prep books only? I have 8 months of these classes, and im pretty sure i could finish/memorize prep books in all three subjects in 1/10 time... Thought regular text books would give me a better basis in the subject.

RHS, did you take the micro/macro exams?

Yes. I took the Micro/Macro course. I also studied from the prep.books, it was the same material and information I learned in class, but the prep. books were less time consuming, more organized, allowed me to memorize and recall the information much better, and even explained the course better and in more detail than the teacher. Thus, the information in the prep. books, in additon to a textbook for materials one doesn't understand is sufficient enough knowledge to receive a 5 on the test. Remember, the AP Mic./Mac. test isn't 5-10 hours long; thus, the prep. books are the most effective method. I'm also taking world history, and when I'm reading the chapters, too much irrelant information is in the book that I don't even need to know. Don't get me wrong here, but for history and social studies, a student should know the definitions, basic information about an era, term, etc., and provide specific examples when writing essays. Thus, I believe spendin too much time on textbooks on studying and learning a subject for a AP exam is quit ineffective for retaining information, though it improves a student's writing, and reading skills. Overall, for history, I recommend reading the prep. book to tie all the subjects and terms all together, and remember some examples in order incorporate it in the essay writings.

I might go with just prep books for macro mirco but im sure I am going to be buying a regular textbook for world history. Anyone have the name of the book their school uses?

Go to the library or ask the AP world history teacher to check out the book, they will allow you. I agree, you don't have to buy a $50 book.

Don't have teacher for this stuff, im getting a textbook, going to my school library(which has nothing of any use) and teaching myself for two periods during the day.

Anyone else?

If you decide to buy a cheap, used textbok from amazon.com, half.com, etc., make sure you also get a prep. book (PR) for Micr. and Macro, I can't enpahize this point too much, because it's such a great method to learn the subject in a matter of weeks with no stress.

Yes, I'm buying the complete Economics Today 13th edition and PR books in both macro and micro. Thanks for the tip on that book.

However I'm still interested in a World History textbook that is suitable for AP. Anyone know the name of the book they used for the class?

'Naked Economics' by Charles Wheelan (ISBN 0393324869) is a great supplement to the econ courses. Yes, I second the PR as THE book for social sciences AP review.

Hey- Do you actually 'need' the Econ text book or can you just teach it to yourself from the prep book?

You can learn from prep book alone, but I'm buying a text because I may end up majoring in econ.

Oh, I'll be majoring in it too (or poly sci or something like that). If my school offers an intro to Econ but doesn't go much further, is it alright that I just screw that class and take it by myself? I know the book they're going to read, so I could just read that. Would that be alright? Yes, it's 1AM, I'm tired, and this question may sound like a newbie chance me question. SORRY (from the heart)
