Independent Study Ideas?

I want to accelerate out of the 2nd semester of AP English Lit. I'll have a free period and I'm thinking about filling it with an independent study.

Has anyone done one of these and has some insight/ideas about what a good study might be?

I'm probably majoring in Biochem or Neuroscience. The AP Chem, AP Physics, Anatomy & Phys, or the AP Environmental Science teacher would probably let me do a study with them. I just have no idea what I'd like to study yet.

Is this part of a special program your school has, or are you just going to be learning some subject on your own?

Sort of both? You submit a proposal to the program and if it gets accepted you can study anything you like. You just have to find a teacher willing to review your work- they basically make sure you are actually doing something. They don’t have to “grade” it.

One guy is taking an Organic Chemistry course online and another guy is writing a book about how recycling relates to the Bible. Literally anything goes.

Well, what interests you? Anything you find particularly motivating or fascinating?

Hmm. This sounds super cliche but I’m fascinated by life in general haha. If it’s living, breathing, then I’m interested. Particularly the brain. That’s why I want to major in Neuro or Biochem.

I just don’t know what a good project for those might be

So you’d be able to do labs?
If so, AP Chem would be a good option. AP Environmental Science would be easier, though…are your other classes really difficult?

@heatoftexas: It doesn’t sound cliche to me. It seems like a unique interest, and far more applicable than some (my primary interest is sci-fi/fantasy in pop culture, to give you an idea of how much more useful your interests are than some). I’d say find what you could potentially do to research one of those fields that you are interested in. The great thing about psychology, especially, is that there are so many things one could research about it.

@Halcyon: You’re a senior member now! Congrats!
