I need to decide between taking AP Statistics or an Independent Study of AP Physics C E+M. Unfortunately I’m locked out of enrolling in Physics because of a conflict with another class (we have an extra lab period in my school). However, I can also drop Stat and do an Independent Study of E+M, which would appear on my transcript as a pass/fail course that does not factor into GPA. Should I do Stat for the GPA boost, or Independent Study E+M because it’s a more fun class with more interesting material?
Have you taken Bio, Chem and Physics during HS? What other math have you taken?
@bopper I have taken Honors Chem and Bio and AP Physics C Mechanics, currently taking AP Bio. I’ve taken BC Calc and currently in Honors Multivariable Calc.

Can you tell us what programs you’re looking at? What do you think is going to make a bigger impact on your admissions / major?
@ArganArt Neither really will, to be honest: looking at English/Economics/CS
I would take AP Stat.
Would your school let you take AP Stat at a community college or a university nearby, or an online course? I agree that AP Stat is probably better but if you enjoy physics you should at least try to get into the class. Good luck!
If you find E+M fun, why not?
What else are you taking and what is your current GPA?
@MYOS1634 Current GPA is 4.14/4.5 (school doesn’t do UW). Also taking AP Bio, CS, Lit, as well as Honors Orchestra and Multivariable Calculus.
Stat could probably raise my GPA; I’m also not sure if it’s a good idea to have only 5 courses senior year on my transcript.
Taking E+M alongside AP Bio may be too intense though.
AP stats would raise your GPA but will not help with admissions; it’ll certainly help with time since it’s easier than other classes and that may be the most important factor senior year.
