Independent Study-supplement statement

"Statement on Research (Optional)
If you have done any research or independent study outside of school, please include an abstract or summary of your work."

Wondering what would be considered 'independent study'? Basically the only thing I have that might qualify is NYU Summer Program, but I wasn't sure if that is considered 'school'...If anyone could clear this up I would appreciate it, thank you!

I took a course outside my normal high school (at a university, actually, just like you). I also did an internship in the summer. I am writing about both of these experiences in the Northwestern research essay.

I’m going to guess that “outside of school” may mean outside of your high school. When my S applied, he responded to this question by writing about a summer internship he did with a USC earth sciences professor.

If I haven’t done any kind of independent study/internship and do not write this essay, will they hold it against me during admissions?

I am also having this dilemma as well. I never really did an specific research and my internship was for MassMutual (I learned about the different types of insurance they offer in addition to the costs and how the whole system works). As a result, I am unsure whether that counts as my “independent study”. If I did write this supplement, would that be beneficial to my application? Or should I just not write it at all.

Thanks for the replies! I think I might write an abstract, just in case…but I don’t even know how to go about it. Also considering I mentioned it in my supplement essay, I’m wondering if it might seem redundant.
I also intern somewhere local, suppose I should include an abstract for that as well. Here’s hoping it won’t hurt just to include it instead of leaving that blank.
