Independent Study?

Hi. :]

I'm switching schools next year (hopefully) and just wanted to get some more information about doing independent studies for AP courses.... AP is kind of a foreign concept here. When should I start? (I'll be in grade ten next year. Should I wait a while?) Also, should I do this online? How else can I do it? Will someone in the school (like a teacher or guidance counselor maybe) help me with it? Will they supply the books? How will I take the exam? I have a lot of questions about this because I'm not sure what to do. I haven't yet contacted the school because it's closed for the holidays, but I'm probably going to do that tomorrow and ask them about how they handle AP, since the school doesn't offer it. However, the school does have an advanced set of classes for stronger students. It's a really well-known program in the province, and I'm going to be in it if I go to that school. If that's the case, will I still need AP?

Thanks! :]

You can start now, actually. I think it’s okay.

You can just self-study APs, unless they are languages or those requiring labs. Most self-studiers use review books and sometimes textbooks.

You can always ask them for help if you don’t understand something presented in the text.

Unlikely, I bought most of the books I needed.

It’s up to you to decide. I’m taking the AP exams partly because I actually like the subjects I’m going to take as I could not study them in school.

Thank you so much for your help! :] So I could even start AP in grade nine? How long will it take to complete one course? I’m really interested in AP Biology… would I be able to self-study that? When would I take the exam?

If you can memorize stuff really well, then yeah take biology.

All AP exams are in May.

Okay, thanks. :]
Let’s say I started AP Bio this February as a grade nine student. (I can memorize and I LOVE bio with all my heart.) Would I do well?
Also, what about AP Calculus? Are there any prerequisites?

Wait, three months isn’t enough… never mind. I’ll just have to wait. :frowning:
What kinds of advanced math courses are there? I think I’ll do those too.

Three months is enough time to study for Env. Sci. or Human Geography

And maybe comparative government.

I’m not really interested in any of those, so I think I’ll just have to wait until next year. :frowning: Thanks, guys! :] Can I start in the summertime? (I just REALLY want to do well.)

Also, just another question: How long does AP Bio take to finish? Should I have taken any classes beforehand? (My school sucks, sorry, I really don’t know much about this. D: Plus it’s newer here.)

And AP Calculus… some people have taken that in grade 9, right? How long does it take, and should I have taken any classes beforehand?

A lot of memorization!

Yeah, I did. So did the rest of my level.

If I’d known about this before, then I would’ve already been done. :frowning: How long would AP Calculus take? And are there any classes I should’ve taken beforehand?
