my stats by the end of High school: 3.75 GPA 1290 SAT
I got rejected from all the UC's for EE major except for UCSC, UCM and UCR.

I am seriously considering community college?
I am currently taking Calc BC hoping for a 4-5, AP Physics, AP Bio hoping for a 4-5....could you give me some advice??? this is my fourth year in USA....I am planning to major in BE/EE....do I have a chance at UIUC, Cornell and what should I be aiming for in community college??

I was exatly in your situation 2 yrs ago...I also came from India...it had been exactly 4 yrs...i got into UCI,UCSB etc and got rej to the top three UCs...i chose the CC route...It all worked well now. So don't worry.

If you want to transfer to an UC, it is all about grades (college only). Your major EE is very competitive. If you are international (F1,H4) it gets even more competitve. You should aim for 3.8+ GPA (esp for top three UCs)

As for UIUC, it seems like you are in good shape. Should be very similar to UC but if you don't live in IL then you will fall under out-of-state category...so it can be a little harder.

In order to be a competitive applicant for Cornell, you will need to maintain your HS GPA. You should try retaking the SAT and raising your score. Also, prep for those AP tests and try to get 5s. Cuz we are really talking ivy here so HS records are very important. good luck.

hey indieboy thanks for your message. I only recently got my green card. so what GPA I should aim for also how long does it take to get out of CC?

Kiran,
If u're a full time student, take the right classes and fairly tough course load, it should take u 2 years. Some take longer, in very rare cases, it can happen sooner.

good luck.

i recomend start going to assist.org and planning ur schedule

so how would rate CC in terms of high school AP classes or regular classes...obviously I am going to try my best but how prep. do you think I would need for EE major?

I think UC Merced would be a cool college to go to this upcoming fall. You'll be one of the first students to attend. Plus it's near Yosemite.

Any of those schools are good in my opinion. I visited a friend at UCSC a few months ago, and the campus is really beautiful! It's right in a forest. Santa Cruz is a beautiful place, period.

But if you don't think you'll be happy at any of them, then community college would be a good choice for you.

kool...you have permanent residency staus. So you will not have any problems. As for me, I applied for EECS (elec eng + CS) as a H4 visa student and even though I had completed most of the reqs and had almost all A...Cal rejected me but fortunately UCLA, UCSD etc accepted me. Even though you have a GC, in order to be a competitive applicant for Cal and UCLA, I would highly reccomend you 3.8+ and most importantly finish as many courses (listed on assist) as you can. Remember if you don't finish the "Required" courses, they will automatically deny you admission.

It depends on your CC, your HS, and the teachers. In my experience, CC has been much tougher than any of my HS classes or AP exams. For the AP exams, I did not do much the whole school yr and couple weeks before the test I simply crammed of the Barron's and easily passed them. So expect CC to be a little harder than HS.

what about the BE major at UCSD, UCLA, UCB?
BE is becoming very popular due to it's potential of creating abundant jobs. It is also a competitive major but obviously it is not as competitive as EECS. BE is very tough to get in for UCLA and Cal. Both these schools were way behind in bio eng, bio med, etc but now they recently created the dept and the major. In order to catch up they have made the admission standards very high. The wierd thing is, UCSD's BE is much easier to get in to but it's BE is ranked #2-#3 in the entire US. As for the numbers, few of my friends who had a GPA ranging from 3.4-3.7 got accepted to Bioeng @ UCSD and got rej to UCLA and Berkeley. But nothing to worry about cuz UCSD's BE is too good.

indie_boy: 3.8+? maybe for berkeley..but 3.5+ should get u into any of the UCs in EE as a transfer from a CCC except maybe UCLA and UCB...
Yes, other than Cal and UCLA....I don't see why the other UCs including UCSD(wohoo !) will reject you with a 3.4+ GPA. Most important thing is, you must complete ALL the courses that is underlined "required" and finish as much other rec courses listed on assist.

indie_boy: yes I agree it seems that even if you have a 3.8+ GPA but you are missing 2-3 courses you will get rejected by lower tier UCs as well.

^^^in that website with my transfer...also can you estimate how many years or semesters it would take me to complete the course work?....I am going to start with Calc. II , Phys3a and Eng. . I already finished Chem 1A and Calc Ia with AP credits.

Berkeley's EECS is not that bad...looks like you have to 2-3 EE/CS classes, 4 math, 2 physics, 2 writing...at least they don't have as many reqs as UCSD, UCD, UCI....you should be able to finish most of it in 2 yrs or less. Few of the classes like EL ENG 20N and COMPSCI 61A are not available @ any CCs. And for EL ENG 40, you can take intro to circ analysis. After you are admitted you can petition it and my friend says that they accept most petitions for this course. I would highly reccomend you to finish unavailable classes like Discrete math (very very important) @ another nearby CC.
