indian ppl!

^ I speak broken Gujurati, and when I don’t understand I just nod :D

Ahh I made that same mistake once!!! I was rambling on in Spanish but she seemed like she understood it haha.

lol. I absolutely hate it when relatives call!!! Whenever my grandmother calls and she asks to talk to me, it’s really awkward. I have difficulty forming sentences, so I always find myself responding “menu ni patha(sp?)” which is Punjabi for “I don’t know.”

Here is our usual conversation in Punjabi…
Grandma - So, what are you doing?
Me - I don’t know.
G - What is your brother doing?
M - I don’t know.
G - …
M - …
G - Can I talk to your brother?
M - Yeah, 1 sec…

rofl It’s terribad.
I srsly need to take some Punjabi classes in college. -_-

I speak Tamil fluently, but I can’t write. I can modify my accent to speak English in an Indian accent when my CEO uncles come over LOL!

I can modify my accent to an American one when talking to my friends.
I’ve been raised in both India and America, and I used to go back and forth like a crazy man. So I just adapted to the change.

Oh and I can read Sanskrit.

can speak hindi but not write it, do you guys do indian form dances like kathak, bollywood, or bhangra or etc???

^^^ Haha totally understandable, I can speak in basic sentences and phrases. I actually don’t know how to say “I don’t know” :D.

^^ If you go into business or international affairs related fields that would really gve you a competitive edge haha.

^ I’m not much of a dancer haha. If people are doing bhangra on the dance floor at a party I’m usually one of the people still at my table and talking to people :).

oh cool, bhangra is cool but in america it has become modern but awesome like every college pretty much has a bhangra team now

I’m pretty fluent in Punjabi only because my none of grandparents know english and both sets of grandparents live with me and always have
but my brother and sister on the other hand… its embarrassing just to listen to them attempt to make a conversation in punjabi

punjabi puts emphasis on words than hindi, on the sounds

It’s all about the Bangladeshis!!! But nah, nice desi representation here.

desi power!

Haha Bangladeshis count too (because there is a “des_i” in Bangladeshi :D)

The 7-11 tag pretty much represents this whole thread.

Someone should put Dunkin Donuts as a tag. I’ve never been inside a 7-11, what’s it like? Haha

haha
10 char

So today in the car Miss Pooja was on the radio (some Indian station lol). My parents felt like it was an embarrassment to society. I laughed  But Miss Pooja has pretty catchy tunes

miss pooja is cool, why would parents think it is an embarrassment to society?

I feel we’re being somewhat disrespected in the American media. I mean think about it. How many Indians do you know on TV? Any American affiliated Indian model or actress you know? Why aren’t there any Indians on MTV reality shows? Why aren’t they teaching AP Hindi or AP Sanskrit, but teach AP Spanish (Hispanic language) and AP French (White language) and AP Japanese (“Asian” language)?
Why aren’t there any Indian CEOs and Indian sports players representing America?

Maybe you know one or two.

But the media always stress out how poor and underdeveloped India is and how all those dark skinned people live and crap on the streets. How we’re always “trapped” in an arranged marriage and how we kiss a cow’s butt…how we have those bad accents.
Most notably, people think of curry (which apparently smells like crap and makes us have body odor) when they mention Indians.

Maybe its also because Indians look like the middle eastern people that America has socially put down over the last couple of years? Much of the hate crimes in America are directed towards Muslim middle eastern people…and people mistake Indians (Sikhs especially) as them?
To be honest, how many white and black people out there would feel comfortable sitting with a dark dude with a huge beard and a turban? So many people in america are judgmental and ignorant.

Is this why we are not appreciated in America?

@quantum thats deep, but every indian is different, but i understand what you by the media thing, about curry and accents and stuff, curry is good though

@quantum I think the Pepsi CEO is an Indian woman, but maybe I’m wrong. But I definitely agree with you about everything you said. People poke fun at Indians (at least in my area), but they have no idea how racist they’re being. Even when I’m with my friends, they’ll say stuff even though I’m right there, so I don’t think they intend to be racist. Indians own a lot of the gas stations and franchises here, and people must be jealous of how filthy rich they are.

@funnypunjabi I have no idea, we aren’t Punjabi and don’t hear much about bhangra music so I guess it’s kinda new to them. It must be a parent thing lol. Miss Pooja seems pretty cool :)

@drexeler, haha punjabi are known for their loud music, there is also other good songs like sardaar by amrit saab, patola by daljit mattu. the teams are the best through, like bhangra empire bruin 2009 performance youtube it
