Indiana Bloomington Greek Life

I am thinking about attending Indiana Bloomington but the Greek life is a huge drawback for me. It's almost half greek and i'm not interested in joining. Has anyone gone or goes now to Indiana and can you tell me if I won't have as much of a social life if I don't go Greek.

i think its more like 17% are involved, and even if it was half that still means that a ton of students are not involved. its a big school so there are a lots of opportunities, so there are a lot of different things you can do without associating with greek life

I’m a freshman there now. The greek life is a pretty big deal and it’ll seem like basically everyone you know is rushing, but it’s not completely overpowering. You can definitely still have a good time and a social life without ever setting foot in a frat or a sorority.

I got one bid from SigEp and I declined. And I don’t feel like my social life will be hindered because of it.

Then again, I’m a guy and I don’t know much about sororities. Sorority rush hasn’t started yet so I’m not exactly sure how that all plays out.

And greek or not, I highly, highly suggest coming here :D

I suggest that you check out Greek life before making the decision to not associate with them.

Even though I’m not at Bloomington, I do have to say this:

I’m in a fraternity, but I still hang out with several non-Greek people. This applies to those in other fraternities too. Being in a fraternity and having outside friends is not mutually exclusive.

When I went to college, I never thought I’d join a fraternity. Apparently, the stereotypes are actaully quite different from the reality. Of course, there will still be some houses that follow the stereotype, but the point is: find out for yourself, you can always turn down a bid if you don’t feel right with a certain group.

Greek life does not comprise “half” the population; more like 20%. The Greeks have a large presence of campus but there are many many people who aren’t part of the Greek system and they still love IU. I plan on rushing but I have many friends who don’t, and that’s perfectly fine with me. Although some Greeks have an elitist attitude, most of them are friendly and don’t care if you’re not one of “them.”

You can DEFINITELY still have a good social life without joining a sorority, especially because you’re a girl.
