Thoughts on the 2 programs?
Both are very well respected undergraduate business programs. US News, for example, rates IU at #11 & Ohio State at #15. US News only ranks the top 215 undergraduate business programs.
Otherwise, cost of attendance & career goals should guide your choice between the two schools.
Are you direct entry into both business schools? If yes, is there a significant cost difference? If no, what do you like better Columbus or Bloomington?
Direct admit to both. Guess she’ll have to revisit the 2 campuses/towns to see which she prefers. Otherwise, seems undergraduate programs are somewhat comparable?
I think IU has just a slight edge for business school, but yes, comparable. Business, music and optometry I believe are IU’s top programs, whereas OSUs are engineering and vet school. If that matters. I live near OSU and went to IU. Two different feels to the schools as in city vs small town. IMO Bloomington is much prettier and often ends up on prettiest campus rankings, and the Greek houses, well there is no comparison if your kid is interested in that. OSU seems much larger in terms of student body and of course has Buckeye football if that’s a factor. One thing that comes to mind for me when I attended Kelley (years ago pre Internet things are probably different) was on campus recruiting. At IU, it was mostly Indiana companies and Chicago. I don’t know if your student has an idea of where he/she wants to end up geographically, but maybe dig into this more (most schools post the larger companies where their graduates end up) and that could be some differentiating information.
I haven’t been, but hear wonderful things about IU in general and Kelley in particular. Our S applied (direct admit) last year because for a moment he wanted to be an “investment banker on Wall Street.” I did a ton of research and found Kelley (Easier to get into than the top ten, way less $ even OOS (got merit). While it’s not a “target” like Wharton, they have a few workshops for high performing kids in that area that places kids on Wall Street. But, more importantly, their program gets rave reviews not only by the experts but by alums. Look at I-Core. Also, use the Poets and Quants site for undergrad business schools rankings, not just for rankings but for their in depth review of b-schools. Indiana is 13, Ohio State 46. Finally, anecdotally, my young cousin is at IU from the east coast and loves it. Her dad says “there’s something in the water, everyone’s so happy there” (son went to Tulane for business before learning about Kelley). Lots of kids from states with good state schools are sending their kids to Kelley. If you can, go to admitted student day for Kelley.
