I am attending IU next year, and I cannot decide between the Central or Northwest neighborhoods. I’ve heard that the Northwest neighborhood is the party neighborhood whereas central is more of a mix of people who like to party and study. Is this generally true? Also looking for pros and cons of the specific dorms. Thanks.
I would check under the “premium housing” thread to carefully understand what’s going on in the Northwest neighborhood. It’s currently under major construction and projected to open fall of 2020. Due to the massive scale of the project, I wouldn’t be surprised if they reopen partially so you will be living in a construction zone.
Partying happens in all dorms but some are definitely more quiet than others.
Wells Quad is generally quiet - gut rehabbed in 2017 with new HVAC and technology.
More importantly, if you have any history of an autoimmune disease or asthma, be sure to discuss those concerns with housing.
Can someone help me for dorm neighborhoods? I’m a DA to Kelley but want to have a lot of fun at parties and games. What dorm has the best mix of fun ppl and close proximity to Kelley? Thanks.
@TAN2424 - northwest
The school just announced the start of the construction of a new dorm (to be completed by 2021) in the Northwest neighborhood of campus to be called NORTH. It will also contain a new dining hall. So if you select northwest, as previously indicated, due to potential ongoing work to complete quad renovations that are underway due to mold issues, and the announcement of this new dorm being built in that same location (attached to McNutt Quad) NW might be a construction zone for awhile. Judging by the takeover of student parking lots for construction equipment and the giant construction fences and cranes easing into what was once part of the tailgate areas, this might have a different feel to it than other parts of campus going forward.
I’m a current student who recently moved out of their dorm, and I wanted to share my thoughts…
-
Wright Quad - kind of gross, super social in comparison to other dorms, good location, close to library, Kelley, fountain, real dorm experience.
-
Ashton - gross.
-
teter- not too bad but wasn’t fully open because of renovations this year, elevated wright quad
-
eigenman - not too bad, fun dorm, far away from everything, almost off campus feeling, KLLC is there so if you’re not in business you might feel like an outsider.
-
Union street - boujee apartments but I don’t know if they’ll be open for freshman next year.
-
Willkie - super dope dorms, private room, share bathroom with suite mate, nice common areas, can be social if you try hard but is known for not being social because no one has a reason to leave their room. You’ll love Willkie if you are really trying to study and need your own space.
-
Collins - sucks.
-
Brisco - nice but superrrr far away from classes, mostly athletes, used to be party dorm but now it’s isolated. Close to tailgates and basketball games though!
-
Forest - really nice food court, fun dorm, bathroom pods which I didn’t hate. Overall not too bad.
-
Spruce - newest dorm I think and it’s really nice. Across the street from the nest dining hall on campus and personally my favorite place to hang out and study
-
wells/goodbody - close to a lot of classes and downtown but overall boringgggg and their dining hall is bad.
I’m probably forgetting some because there’s a lot but that’s all my opinion
