I've been accepted into both schools but I can't decide which one I'd rather attend. I want to Major in Biochemistry and be premed.

For what you want to major in, I’d say choose Purdue because their forte is definitely math and science-based majors. IU is stronger in liberal arts.

I’d say go for Purdue. It has a great science and engineering programs.

That is what I sort of thought would be the best choice. Although I did make it into purdue, I didn’t get into their engineering program, which kinda turned me off from them, even though it shouldn’t.

I thought I degree from IU would be good because they actually have a medical school, but I suppose that doesn’t make a difference when it really comes down to it.

I mean…I’m inclined to say Pur-don’t, and that West Lafayette has been keeping ugly girls out of Bloomington since 1869…but if you’re leaning towards biochem and pre-med, Purdue is probably a better choice.

Ok, I think I’m going to give a bit of different advice than anyone else. Both are good schools, I don’t think you can go wrong with either. If you wanted to work in a lab I would say you should go to Purdue, but because you want to go to Medical School I would say IU. IU Med School is very good, and I assume you live in Indiana and so you get in-state. Also, IU has completely new science facilities. Therefore, I think that if you KNOW you want to do medicine go to IU. But, if you just think you might want to go into medicine I would go to Purdue because youre leaning towards that now. I have friends that go to both and love them both. I live in Bloomington, and people that go to Purdue do complain a bit that they miss how beautiful our town is, but youre not going for looks. Good luck! Tell us which you decide upon!

Also, if you haven’t already post this in the Purdue section too. I know a lot more about IU, people over there probably know more about PU.

That was what I was thinking originally. I thought that if I didn’t go to Purdue’s engineering program that I would more likely want to go to IU for premed. I know for sure that I’m going to medical school even if it means I have to take the MCATs a 100 times, I just really know that’s what I want to do. I’ve done plenty of job shadowing and such, so I can’t really see myself doing anything else. I know more people that go to IU than Purdue, and they all love it especially because of Bloomington. I like Purdue, but West Lafayette was just meh. But the people I know at Purdue, more hate it than like it. In all honesty though, I really don’t care about the town, really concerned about academics and the “name.” but I don’t really know how much that is considered when applying to medical school.

My son was also accepted to both schools (from California). He visited both schools (on back-to-back days) and said he knew within the first 20 minutes that he was in West Lafayette that he didn’t want to go to Purdue.

The problem for him was that, while Purdue itself is fine, there is nothing to do in Lafayette or West Lafayette–and he didn’t want to end up bored to death.

Every person has to decide what works for them–and personally I’ve enjoyed Purdue when I’ve visited (and recruited students for jobs with my employers) at the school. However, you need to visit in order to decide if you, like my son, will be turned off by the school, or if the school will be enough for you if the city itself is not so interesting or even partially acceptable.

P.S. My son is due to graduate from IU-B this coming May as a business major.

I agree with someone above that said if you want to work in a lab, go to Purdue. If you want med school–IU. My ds is a sophomore, and his roomate, his girlfriend and his best friend are all pre-med. They’re all very smart–all could’ve gone anywhere–but they chose IU. I went to Purdue. Dh went to Purdue. I’m not putting it down. Obviously it’s a terrific school and it won’t hinder you if you go there, but I wouldn’t say it’s better.

You might take a look at this link. This woman has been all over the news and wrote a best seller about her stroke–which is interesting because she’s a brain scientist–and she’s at IU.

I came across these post after googling “which school is better for medicine, Purdue or IU?” I have also been accepted to both Purdue and IU and plan on majoring in biology and doing premed. I am unsure about which school to attend because both appeal to me, though i have recently had more interest in attending IU. That being said I am still considering Purdue, because I have been told it’s better academically. These post have been really helpful and I am just curious as to where the original poster ended up?

Being a premed freshmen, you will need to take the new MCAT which consists more content in ethics, psychology, behavior sciences. I think IU is actually a better choice. I am not sure how strong you are in science and humanity. Without the engineering students, IU has perhaps less competition in the premed classes. There are still many top students who would have gotten into Ivy League schools if they chose to. If you work hard/smart and avoid taking too many honors chemistry/physics classes, you can manage your GPA well. Improve your reading through social/humanity courses, your MCAT verbal will be more than decent.

DS1 is pretty happy with his opportunity in research and other activities at IU. He has taken tons of science honors classes and maintains a GPA close to 3.9. However, if you want a chance of pursuing engineering as a back-up to premed, you should go to Purdue.

I would not dismiss IU because Purdue is known more for math or science. I think that is a result of having an engineering school, not necessarily better math or science classes or better pre-med.

Both of my IU kids were/are Honors students. Both knew/know lots of Honors kids majoring in biochemistry and pre-med. It actually seems to be the new “in” major for smart kids. I know D’s friend is now in grad school and doing pharm. research.

Honestly you need to visit both campuses and get a feel for the two of them. You are getting a degree from (forgive me) two nearly identical schools in the eyes of whichever Medical School you apply to. Look beyond just the academic perspective and look at what you want in an university experience.
