Indiana University vs. The University of Alabama

Hi Everybody! I am stuck between these two schools and wondering what other people think. I am going for business and although Kelly is better than Culverhouse, I have been admitted to Culverhouse at Bama while I'd have to apply to Kelly at IU after freshman year and run the chance of not getting in. I am out of state for both schools so the price difference in not significant enough to sway me. I want to live in the greater NYC area after college and I think they both are reputable schools in that area. Also I know IU and the Bloomington area very well because my brother attends the school and I know people there because of this, but at the same time, there is something exciting about going somewhere I don't know. Any input would be helpful.
Thanks!

Isn’t there direct admit now for Kelly? Look into that.

Direct admit is very tough for Kelley (it’s Kelley)

Just another option and less than 60 minutes away from your family member. A lot of kids really like it. Maybe you are direct admit here?

Haha thanks for the Kelley correction. I do have the scores for IUPUI, but I don’t think I’d consider it. Just trying to get a feel for what people think is a better school. I really like both schools, but if Indiana is a lot better then its worth the risk of not getting into Kelley. It could actually be a good motivator to do really well freshman year.

What are your stats? include SAT breakdown.

What are your parents saying about paying the OOS costs at either school?

Do you qualify for any of Bama’s generous merit scholarships?

What area of business interests you?

What would you do at IU if you didn’t get into Kelley?

Why only these 2 b-school options? Where are you in-state for?

In any case, if it matters, Kelley is an IB target if you get in to the IB workshop (or at least IM workshop) there, though they are competitive to get in to even if you get in to Kelley.

However, while direct admit in to Kelley is tougher than, say, admission in to IU, Kelley is a huge b-school, so a direct admit in to Kelley is easier to get than, say, a preferred admit to Ross (Ross has roughly a quarter the undergrads as Kelley@IUB).

BTW, I would not assume that people in NYC would know anything about Culverhouse.

Im in state for UConn (Not Considering). I liked the feel of Alabama more, but I feel Indiana is a better school. Just trying to see if people think the academics are vastly different.

I would say the academics are roughly the same, but I would not say that the range of opportunities after graduation are.

OP… have you looked at the grad placements? I don’t know about NYC in particular, but Culverhouse grads have a high job placement rate post graduation.

what area of business will you be majoring in? Obviously, some areas have better salaries than others.

From your above words, I’m guessing that you’ve visited? Yes, people do fall in love with it upon visiting.

What are your stats? Do you qualify for any merit at Bama?

The NYC chapter of the UA Alumni Association has over 6000 members. I would bet there are more than a few working on Wall Street. I think some of the UA fraternities have good alumni networks in that area.

^^
Exactly…the UA alumni group in NYC is very active and popular.

Sorry for not responding for a while! I’m still undecided in what area of business I want… Leaning towards marketing but I’m also interested in accounting. Unfortunately my gpa was not a 3.5 because I come from a really challenging high school and even though the colleges know I would have a better gpa at most other schools they weren’t able to grant me an automatic scholarship. Alabama is roughly 10,000 less a year though. I did visit and fall in love with Aabama but I feel equally about Indiana. I feel like both these schools are on the rise (not that they are bad… Just getting even better). Even though Kelley is ranked in top ten business schools and Culverhouse is in the 70’s the two schools seem overall equal and that’s why I’m so confused. They both have their pros and cons but none extreme enough to push me one way or another. They are both very social schools with amazing Greek life and I have connections at both. It is such a tough decision that I can’t make

How would you pay for the $10,000 difference? Out of pocket? From a college fund? With a loan?
