Indiana vs. Iowa

I think he has the Big Ten mixed up with the SEC. :)
I thought I understood big time college sports- and then I moved to Tennessee!!!

I understand that each team only has a bout 6/7 home games a year. And I know that football/basketball isn't the only thing going on at these schools.

I just want a big time sports atmosphere, and pretty much all of the Big 10 schools offer that. And if I'm surrounded by people who don't care about sports...then I'll go find people who do.

I think of U of Iowa and Indiana U as very different places.

Can you do what you want to do academically at both? I know the Kelly School of Business at IU is highly regarded, but it is my impression that you have to apply to it coming straight from high school. I may be out of date, so double check, but that's my understanding. I'm not sure that it's all that easy to transfer into it later. So, if you are interested in things other than business, check to see if you can take courses in those areas while enrolled in Kelly. Again, I am NOT purporting to know the answer, just saying this is something you should check. I have NO idea how the biz major at Iowa works. But if as a practical matter, you have to commit to major in business before you begin at IU and don't have to do so at Iowa, that might make the choice for you.

How do you feel about Greek life? I LOATHE it--just personal opinion and many other posters will tell you how wonderful it is. Greeks are EXTREMELY powerful at IU --again, I don't know about Iowa. But if this is something you care one way or the other about, it might help you differentiate among your big state schools. (And, from what I know, the idea that nobody at IU would care about how much your clothes cost is wildly off the mark. )

Iowa has one of the best creative writing programs in the nation and has always been very strong in speech, communications, and other related areas

You need to do some homework. I would start by figuring out what differences there are in course work and how soon you have to commit to a business major at each of the schools on your list. Are you ready to make that commitment now if you have to do so?

And, personally...I'd pick Iowa over IU in a heart beat.

jonri, you can apply to Kelly later, as well, if grades and such are good. It doesn't have to be as an incoming freshman. I don't know how easy it is to get in later, as my son is in the music school at IU, not the business school. It IS a big party school, but you can find other kids who aren't into that--at a school as big as IU, there are all types of people. And my son DOES enjoy the basketball games. He says IU basketball and football are improving.

I can't really compare the two schools, however, as I know nothing about Iowa and not that much about business at IU.

You only get a direct admit to Kelley as a freshman if you meet certain academic qualifications- I think you have to have a 1300 AND top 10% of your class or something like that. Otherwise, you get in as a sophomore.

Well thanks for all of the help.

I've decided on Indiana University. I just finished the application.

Thanks again...
