Indiana

I dont necessarily, although it would be nice, want to get directly admitted into business, but just to the university is fine, seeing as though I can admit after a year and it wouldn't really matter. I am looking at University of Indiana, and want to go into marketing. Here's anything that will work towards me getting in:

Junior at Libertyville, a pretty competitive school
3.15 GPA (progressively grown from a 2.7)
28 ACT
Editor-in-chief of school newspaper (a good one, too)
Varsity Tennis
Somewhat difficult classes ([this year: dropped out of honors english into regular track, still higher classes than most kids my age] English Lit, AP Stats, French 4 Honors, AP US history, Newspaper, Physics)

Could I get directly admitted to business (marketing), perhaps with a damn good essay/interview? I know its a huge stretch, but hey whatever. I guess I expect to go to a college somewhat out of my means because I do consider myself smarter than a lot of kids, I just suck academically and have never really tried (I'm sure you hear that a lot).

If not business, I should get into just the university, right?

Thanks!
-George

First of all, it's Indiana University (at Bloomington), not the University of Indiana.

Second of all, your score of 3.15 GPA and 28 ACT should get you accepted, but is not enough to get you direct admit status into the business school. For that you will need either a 29 ACT (likely to be 30 ACT next year) or a 3.5 UW GPA.

Once you are in the university, you need to take 26 units, and four specificed courses with a 3.0 GPA average to get accepted into the business school.

Just to show you how Indiana University's business school has become much more competititve, check out this quote from Business Week dated March 19th of this year:

At schools with four-year programs, SAT and ACT requirements have gone up. The average sat score for freshmen admitted to the Indiana University business program, WHERE APPLICATIONS NEARLY DOUBLED LAST YEAR, is now 1340 [SAT CR+M] up from 1312 in 2005-2006 and a full 343 points higher than the national average for test takers who intend to major in business." (capitalization is mine)

If you are from out of state (I know this doesn't apply to you--but this is for everyone who is reading this thread), be sure to apply early. For those who have pretty good GPA and test scores, you can get up to a $28,000 scholarship by applying early, while this drops to $4,000 for those who don't apply until December or later. If you are in-state, they also offer even more scholarships in an effort to keep the top students from in-state going to the school.

P.S. Also, if you are a finance major, I should point out that while schools like Penn, NYU, and Chicago have a higher number of recruits, the Indiana University business school students who get into the Investment Banking Workshop were hired into top investment banking firms at a 93% rate in 2005 and a 100% rate (yes, 100%) in 2006.
