Indians at Dartmouth

hey, i was talking to my guidance counselor about dartmouth (im trying to decide between NU, Dartmouth and Stern (NYU) for ED in the fall), and she said that there were not many indians at the school and that my being indian (as in from the indian subcontinent) might give me an edge? is that true? approx how large is the indian community at dartmouth? When I visited I only spotted one, but I also did come in the middle of exams, so I expect a lot of them were in studying.

My son and his Indian friend went to Dimensions (the accepted student program). They noticed that while there seemed to be Chinese and Koreans etc. there were almost no Indians in sight. The friend went to the Asian cultural dinner and met very few there either. So, your guidance counselor might be on to something. The reason for this is probably that Dartmouth is a liberal arts school, and most Indians are encouraged by their parents to study something in the science and engineering fields.

that could be said the same of Asian kids. The lack of Southasians at the "Asian Dinner" is because they tend to congregate separately, since the SOuth Asians have their own group, MILAN. Now, I haven't been to other schools too much to see how many Indians are there, but I'd say Dartmouth has a fair share--that is, as well-represented as East Asians, a number that is low at Dartmouth as well. Moreover, for all intents and purposes of statistics, which is about the only reason why colleges care about "ethnic diversity", Indians go into the same pool as East Asians

As an Indian Dartmouth alum, I can tell you there's no advantage is admissions. Actually there are annually about 200-300 Indians on campus, which is 5-7% of the population: its not a small amount. One thing to consider though, as Sol mentionedm is most of the Indians at Dartmouth are not really a part of the DAO (only a few are), most are in Milan.

Really slipper, you're Indian? Me too.

I'm at Northwestern right now, but I was seriously considering to attend Dartmouth. NU probably has less than 10% indian like dartmouth, but it just seems larger since the student body is larger. You shouldn't make your college decision solely on its ethinic makeup. I'm sure you'll have a great time regardless of the indian population.
