The more I look at UPenn for undergrad admission after the 2007 school year, the more I think it is for me. But I was wondering about any Indian Student Associations/Dance Teams at Penn…

There is something called Penn Masala. I think it's a dance or music thingie

Masala is a very very good acapella group. For dance there is Penn Damaka (I think), and I guess they're ok?

I only hang with some Indians, though, so that's all I know. Also, all the fobs despise SAS...

^ Penn is one of the most Indian schools in the USA. Enough said =()

Hey, is that indian a cappella group athma still around in penn?

The female one? Yes. Not nearly as popular as Masala though...

is masala also an a cappella group? give me a description of masala...:)

Convenient, using the exact words that you used, it is an:

indian a cappella group

The Indian community at Penn is strong. I'm pretty sure there's more than one dance troupe.

On the whole, the Indians have the reputation at Penn for being very cliquely with only Indians. But my roommate was Indian and didn't meet that stereotype. He was a great guy.

I've found the american born indians to be more cliquey than the fobs.

haha that is quite funny...and weird!!

As far as I know, in terms of dance, there are two >official< dance troupes. One's all female, PENNaach, and one's all male, Penn Dhamaka. But many people seem to get together with their friends to choreograph and perform and such.

Aww, there's nothing with both guys and girls?

ah my favorite topic! indian community at penn is very active and yes, i'll admit, very cliquey...but it's possible to be involved in both the indian community and non-indian community

as far as performing arts groups:
penn masala: a capella all male group
atma: a capella all female group
pennaach: official all female dance troupe
dhamaka: official all male dance troupe
thillana: rising bharata natyam dance group
masti: co-ed dance troupe--bollywood style
hype: co-ed dance troupe--more modern style

at the sas shows, you're welcome to gather a group of friends and perform...each class usually does a dance for these shows

plenty of opportunities to be involved :)

sighh...
i love penn. :)

yall desi's want to help me out getting into Penn?

What about us Indian folk who arent too good at dancing?! :(

Damn.. The fact that I'm Indian is probably going to go against me in the admission process since there are so many Indians applicants as well as Indians in Upenn.. doh!

Just a heads up: the only one of those that anyone takes seriously is Masala :X

please don't say that jco!!! i'm in thillana :(

yes, masala is the most popular, but partly b/c they have international status and did the soundtrack for american desi...in short, thye're amazing

but all the others also get support...i went to the naach, dhamaka, and masala shows...all were amazing! my friend went to the atma show and said the same about it

the other three aren't official yet so aren't that well known, but that doesn't mean they're not good!

as far as i know, all of these groups are gonna be having try-outs...if you don't get into them, though, it's definitely not hard to get together a group of people who share your interests and just start a group (that's how thillana started)...and you're always welcome to perform at the shows :)
