Indians At Umass

Hi I am an indian accepted to Umass class of 2022. I was wondering how the indian community is around there (if any) and how easy is it for any outsider (international) to settle there? Anyone experienced please share your experience.

I can’t speak as an Indian, but I can speak as someone who lived in Amherst (as an adult) for 10 years. Amherst is very diverse as a community and very welcoming and open to all cultures. UMass is also a very diverse campus. I think you would easily find a welcoming Indian community in the area, and it is definitely an easy school to be diverse at.

Thank you that is a beautiful answer, I have high regards for amherst now.

Sorry–be diverse at sounds silly. I meant the school itself is diverse and it’s open to all cultures.

Hi

We are from India. My son got admission in undergrad computer science major, for fall 2018 . We are under confusion regarding selection. Can someone throw light on these universities? 1)Rutgers New Brunswick 2)UMass Amherst 3)Texas A&M College Station 4)UT Dallas 5)FSU Tallahassee 6)University of Florida Gainesville

He got admits in few more like ASU Tempe Indiana University Bloomington , Purdue Polytechnic UC Merced etc.

Could someone throw light on 6 universities listed above, which we would like to consider seriously

Regards
Vijaya

Thanks guys for your replies. I get a picture that Umass is very accommodating and open. I hope I can unwind and settle into the new culture with ease. after all I am travelling 5000 miles, I hope that it is worth it.

@charizard1234 you will love Mass I left my country 30 years ago and have loved this state ever since, people are the best…now my son is going to UMASS please inbox me if you need any help and my son will probably be in your classes since he is going to UMASS in the fall.

Thanks a lot for your opinion @MomNama . Makes my decision a tad easier.

Most Indian community settle in Northeast, specifically Dwight and Leach. You may also join a CS rap. They tend to have a lot of Indians too

@HC1006 Thanks a lot for that piece of information, I will look into that.
