I was just wondering for those of you who know, are going to UF now, have already had this option....

Do we ever get a chance to let the housing office know about preferences regarding smoking or nonsmoking? our living habits? things like that which will help them pair us with people who share some of the same preferences as ourselves

There are certain things I cannot compromise on...smoking for instance. I can't stand the smell of smoke. I cannot be around it in my living environment like that. I get migranes and the smell is one of the triggers.

If anyone has any information about this will you please let me know?

Are you talking about housing as in the dormitories? In this case, smoking is absolutely prohibited in the dorms. As for apartments, yes most places have some kind of preference matching.

I read on their website that smoking is prohibited in the dorms but even if the person doesnt smoke in the dorms, they still smell like smoke and all their belongings smell like smoke, so i was wondering if we can specify that we want to be with a non smoking roommate. I don't have a friend going there to request s a roommate so that is an issue i am concerned about.

No, you cannot. Unless you specify a roomate, you can only specify 2 things: what kind of room (single, double, apartment style) and what building.

Yea unfortunately that is something you are going to have to deal with. But you are not going to be really close to your roommate all the time to smell it. Just bring with you a fan or air filter and keep it running and it should be okay.

If you are really that sensitive to it and can't deal with it, then you can request a transfer to another room. Also, in some time the housing office will give you your room assignment with your roommate contacts. So I would suggest you give her a call and ask so you can deal with it early.

ah okay. that stinks (no pun intended). I guess I am just going to cross my fingers and hope for the best. It says on the housing contract we find out our assignments for fall early to mid june so I'll call as soon as I get the chance. Thanks for your help guys!

Ditto on everything above. Just wanted to add that UF has a new policy that states smokers can not smoke within 50ft of a building on campus. If enforced its would be very difficult for someone to smoke on campus. Unfortunately, it is not enforced strictly. I totally agree with you on smokers. I don't understand why some would do it if they know the harmful effects.

I don't want to get into a debate on here (like my hookah thread in college life) but why would anyone do anything if they knew the harmful effects? Drive a motorcycle without a helmet? Eat fast food?

I think someone who habitually eats mcdonalds is much worse off than someone who smokes an occasional cigar.

But I'll make the assumption that the poster is referring to chain-smokers and not the "I do it every once in a while" group.

Eating McDonald's does not affect the people around you. Smoking affects the health of people around the smoker, and most smokers I have meet smoke at least once a day not once in a while like you stated.

Yeah I know what the OP was saying, and I'm related to people like that so I completely respect that. My post was in reference to:

"I don't understand why some would do it if they know the harmful effects."

I just did the housing thing two days ago. There is a question like "are there any severe allergies we should know about?" I'm sure if you put smoke down, they might pair you with another person who was allergic to smoke, so there would be a mutual thing going on... haha.

Visirale, where was this? Was it on the the housing application or on the housing contract?
