How can you mentally prepare yourself for Indoc?

Rent "Full Metal Jacket" and remember
1 It's only for three weeks
2 Lesser people than you have made it through this
3 Indoc is the easy part....you don't have to think, just do as you are told.
4 The real challenge comes when the classes start.
5 It's all just a mind game intended to teach you to put the needs of the
group ahead of your own.

Congratulations, Cero!

DON'T take anything personally, stay under the radar and DON'T GET NOTICED!

There will be plenty of times when you'll wonder "what was I thinking???" But come Acceptance Day, when you get those wings pinned on, and see how incredibly proud your parents are, you'll know what a huge honor you have truly earned.

Hang in there - and eat 'em up!

not to burst anyone's bubble, but making it to acceptance day is not much of an accomplishment.

Its the small steps @ KP that get to graduation. Each set is as important to the next.

KPMarineopsdad - that's Dumbest suggestion i have ever heard..Suggest you go watch the movie again..Maybe the seen were Vince Donofrio commits suicide is where you want to start.

hey Oliver Drab,
why don't you establish some credibility before you go and bash these people? i don't know who you are, but you've already shot yourself in the foot on this forum... we're not here to see who has the best advice. leave opsdad alone. he's been writing a lot longer than you have and knows a thing or two.
all you've done on this forum is bash people... we don't need that here. if you want to be like that to people, go somewhere else. this forum is supposed to help people, not cut them down.
let's remember, we're all on the same side people! no need to berate and belittle each other...
SPREAD THE LOVE!

Good advice is2day!

Actually, the movie you want to watch beforehand is Top Gun, so you understand why everyone is singing "You've lost that loving feeling" in the shower...

Although, I'd say watching Full Metal Jacket is a good idea, than you can see where all the DIs get their lines from

So how often will we get to send/receive mail? Also, how much time will they give you to use the bathroom and how often?

don't worry about it. you'll get mailcall every night, and ample head calls.

My friends always tell me I can handle major problems, but the simplest things usually get me.

Spit shine!!

great call oliver!
if you've never shined a pair of shoes, it's definitely good to learn to do it to a glossy shine.

does anyone know if kp has weapons training and the opportunity to earn a ribbon as a marksman/sharpshooter/expert?

we have a fully operational pistol range here at school. during Indoc you go down there once and learn basic safety and run a couple of rounds through a M9 service pistol. the Range Master sends out a weekly schedule of when there are open live-fire relays, as well as when an offical Navy Qual test is being given. there is also a pistol class available for PE. i just finished that class and upgraded my qualification to Sharpshooter.

as far as for rifle, we do not have a large enough facility for the M16 qualification. as such, there isn't a way to qualify here at school. i've talked with the Range Master about the possibility of a team movement to the nearest range that has the capability of such a qual, but it's doubtful we can pull it off.
some students have gotten their rifle qual during sea year--either through an internship or sometimes on their ship they can take it (some MSC ships allow you to from what i've been told). if i find out any more about how to get the rifle qual i'll let you know!

have a great summer!

how can anyone go to the range? and do you they provide you with m9s?

as a midshipman, you're welcome to use the range during any open live fire time you want. you must take the basic firearm safety course first, then you're welcome to shoot as much as you like. they have the M9s here, so no worries. i wouldn't suggest bringing your own weapon, as that can get you in serious trouble.

Indoc is the easiest part of the KP experience. You will get out only what you put into it. While you're there you'll see kids who don't care at all and kids who care way too much. Everyone gets through as long as they want to. That's really the main purpose, to get rid of the people who don't want to be there. The hardest part of KP is academics. You can be as lazy as you want and be completely worthless as far as indoc is concerned and get through fine. As a matter of fact, most people who earn the "honor plebe" ribbon during indoc either get set back or kicked out at some point. Academics, Academics, Academics... that's the most important thing, not whether or not you can move a fake rifle from you're right shoulder your left shoulder. Once indoc's over, it's over forever and is completely irrelevant. Take advantage of it to get to know your fellow classmates and depend on each other. You'll look back on it later and laugh about how serious it all seemed at the time. Take it seriously, but don't loose any sleep over it. The real challenge is making it through the first trimester. Academics always has been the number 1 reason for setbacks and dis-enrollments. There's no grade for indoc or regimental performance.

I'm not saying blow off the regiment; it's just important to keep your priorities straight. If studying more for physics means spending a few less time shining you're shoes or practicing the POA, then so be it. You've got far more important things to do.

is there an appropriate luggage size to carry all my things for indoc or it doesnt matter
