Im currently a sophomore in college and I dont know what major is right for me. So far im just taking science classes because of pre med requirements. However im not sure if Pre-Med is the right path for me. I always liked designing things and I wanted to ask anyone who thinks industrial design would be a good major for me. However I know the payment for it is not as great compared to someone going into the medical path any thoughts. Plz i need help on deciding what major I should choose. I keep thinking of business ideas aswell and I tend to be creative with things. Im not sure though im just choosing the medical path to be on the safe side and I feel neutral about it. The only thing motivating is the money which is why Im choosing it. I feel like people who major industrial design dont make anything I went and searched there earnings and its not in the six figures :( any thoughts plz help it will make my day.

Hello Mike!
I dont know if this is to late but Im also a sophomore in college as well. Im attending AAU, Academy of Art University, which is based in San Francisco, CA. Luckily I am currently studying as an Industrial Designer, Transportation, to be exact and like you, I am actually trying to transfer next Fall 2012, just to a state school. Im trying to get into medicine because like how you were always facinated by Industrial Design, i’ve somehow always in the back of my head been into medicine and business, but really couldnt pursue it cause I think I wasnt smart enough, and I kind of slacked off towards the end of my senior year of highschool.
To answer your question about industrial designers making less than six figures a year, that is true. However, it also depends on where you get hired and what you convey to the employers through your portfolio.
What I wanted to know, if you can answer this or know someone, is if as a Industrial Designer, currently in my Spring term as a sophomore, how much will it set me back, and pursue this other goal. I was thinking either drop my core classes and focus on my LA classes and than transfer out with those and see if I can transfer, or just dim down and go to a CC than transfer that way. Oh I also have financial issues even school is paid for thru FAFSA, Cal Grants, and Private Loan.
