Hi fellow CCers. One of my friends wants to major in industrial design but she's having some trouble finding schools that even offer this major. Can anyone recommend some that do? The only ones she's found so far are Carnegie Mellon, Pratt, and Arizona State. Thanks!

anyone know?

frutiaspice,

You'll get more input on the Arts Majors board. There is a similar discussion there right now listing the top 5 ID schools.

The only one I know about is at CMU -- it's an excellent program.

Illinois Institute of Technology. I know an alumnus, and he loves his career.

Alright. Thanks for the advice!

Are you kidding? Check out University of Cincinnati. They have one of the top industrial design programs in the country and have a 1.5 year guaranteed, paid coop as part of their program. They even were rated higher than CMU for ID. Also, they have a transportation design program in addition to their ID program. I am surprised that Cincinnati didn't surface in your research.

Another top choice would be RIT. They have a very strongly rated, top-notch program. In my opinion, both schools are at least as good as CMU and a lot less expensive.

My DD's roommate at Rochester Institute of Technology is an ID major. They have a School of Design and offer other options as well.

RISD is like the ivy league of art schools. It's AMAZING. Definately check it out. I think Industrial Design is one of their most popular majors.

RISD is NOT the top ID school. Anyone in ID will tell you that and the rating support this conclusion. It is a very good school but not as great for ID as for other majors there. Also both RISD and CMU don't have transportation design as an option too.

The top ID schools are Art Center College of Design, Cincinnati, CMU, Cleveland College of Design, RIT and and Pratt Institute. per Industrial Design Magazine and from what I can ascertain from other top designers who I have spoken with. You should go to the Core77 web site. There who web site is devoted to ID. They have a list of recommended schools. Check them out. I can't give you the url since this would violate the terms of service, but you can do a search for core77.

Good luck

For a less expensive, public school route, you can't beat Virginia Tech or NC State. They both have very well respected Industrial Design programs. Also look into Auburn which also boasts a great ID program. NC State is pretty hard to get into as an OOS student, though, and VT is getting tougher all of the time.
