industrial product design with no portfolio

My daughter has recently gotten interested in industrial/product design. She has a 3.5 GPA, and is currently a junior. She has a few years of CAD in high school, and did a summer at FIT taking an interior design class. She has taken one high school art course and is currently taking physics. Stronger on the math/science side than writing/reading. She has no portfolio to speak of and it seems she will need to focus on that very quickly if she is serious about design as a major. What are your suggestions/recommendations for possible college programs (would prefer a more mainstream university than an art school in case she changes her mind) to start exploring.

Also would welcome ideas about a summer art program to build a portfolio.
Thank you!

University of Cincinnati DAAP has one of the best Industrial Design Programs in the country and does not require a portfolio for admission…sounds just right for her. Check out Arizona State too. Syracuse University and Carnegie Mellon are other options but they do require a portfolio.

There are summer high school programs in Product/Industrial Design at lots of art schools throughout the country. Some good options are RISD, Pratt, Carnegie Mellon, California College of the Arts, Cleveland Institute of the Arts and College for Creative Studies.
