Looking for any info on the acting program at Southern Methodist University. Do people like it? What type of training is it? What do alumni do? Thanks ahead of time.
I know that it is selective and requires an audition. My D has a good friend that goes there for acting and loves it. Don’t know too much more beyond that.
Thank you @stagedoormama
My daughter applied and was accepted to the BFA Theater Arts program. She preferred it over the acting program because she also wanted to write and devise work. She really liked her audition and the auditors. She didn’t visit campus, but has a former classmate who attends there and her input was she liked the program, but it’s definitely not a conservatory environment. SMU has a decent number of general ed courses, and while the degree is BFA…it definitely has some BA qualities. My daughter was looking for a conservatory experience and so this swayed her quite a bit. She also really wanted an urban campus, which SMU is not.
The program itself, on paper, was exactly what she was looking for though. Plus, the weather is nice year round.
I will also add that the aid from SMU was outstanding. My D had about a 3.5 u/w GPA and 28 ACT and got generous aid around $40k in merit and talent awards (she also writes amazing essays, so that may have helped).
As a mom, I really liked the school and would have loved if she chose SMU.
