Hi, I’m a rising senior from NJ and I was recently down in DC for the AU Preview Day and I have a couple questions about the Honors Program. From what I understood, you receive notification of your acceptance into the program once you have already enrolled and that there is no separate application for it. Just hoping someone can confirm/correct that.

I was also wondering if anyone had any info about the average numbers (GPA, SAT, ACT, etc) of people who get into the honors program have.

Also I was hoping some people could give me some idea as to my chances for admission into the University/the Honors Program, here are some quick stats:

GPA (unweighted/weighted): 3.62/4.22

SAT I:
1st time: 2240 (760 CR, 740 M, 740 W)
2nd time: 2210 (790 CR, 690 M, 730 W)

SAT IIs:
Math II: 790
Lit: 710
US History: 800

APs:
US History, Comp Sci, Lang/Comp: 5

Thanks in advance and this is my first post on CC so let me know if I did anything horribly wrong :P

D is a rising sophomore, so I can’t guarantee it’s the same now, but entry into the Honors program was included in her acceptance letter. There was no separate application. Your stats look promising (for a possible merit award as well), but the criteria may change from year to year and may vary depending on the applicant’s intended major (not sure about that), so it’s probably of little value to speculate about your chances for admission into Honors at AU.

I remember the admissions people saying that the Honors Program was only for like the top 10% admitted in the class. Actually… I’ll look it up now. The average GPA with unweighted/weighted was 4.25 for Honors. So that means that a 4.25 would probably be low for weighted… which means you 4.22 might be below that. It is still in range… So you never know.

But you probably would get a good bit of merit aid.

@Piemaster - were you able to attend the Honors overview session while you were on campus for Preview Day? Many of your questions could have been answered there! Anyway, I’m happy to provide the average academic results for our admitted Honors cohort from this past admissions cycle:

My GPA is low, but SAT and ACT are high. I had some trouble in freshman year but have had an upward trend in grades since. Do you think I’d be disqualified from consideration to the honors program because of my GPA?

GPA: 3.6 Taking 5 more AP classes senior year, expect to do well (I hope!).
SAT: 2340 - CR & M 800, W 740
ACT: 33
AP Scores: USH 5 Eng 5 Latin 4 Physics 5

@KBJandAUandADMIS: No I wasn’t able to attend since we had to leave right after lunch so we could make the drive back up to NJ in time. But thank you for providing the stats and thanks to everyone else for responding!
